A day among the organic rice paddies of Rovasenda, discovering Piedmontese rice and biodiversity
In Rovasenda, a small town in the province of Vercelli nestled in the Baraggia, rice is not just an agricultural product: it is culture, landscape, and identity. The Piedmontese Rice Bio-District Day takes place at Cascina Teglio, a certified organic farm that produces varieties such as Carnaroli, Sant'Andrea, Baldo, and Rosa Marchetti, following the principles of sustainable, low-water-consumption agriculture.
For an entire day, the farm opens its fields and spaces to the public, transforming into a place of discovery where adults and children can experience firsthand the deep bond between rice, water, and the land of the Baraggia.
The event is promoted as part of the Piedmontese Rice Bio-District, established in 2021 between the provinces of Vercelli and Biella to promote organic production and agricultural biodiversity in the region. The Bio-District brings together rice farmers who have chosen to cultivate with respect for the environment, reducing the impact on the ecosystem and protecting the species that inhabit the rice paddies. The day at Cascina Teglio is one of the moments when this network of producers shares its story with the general public.
The program weaves together nature, science, and tradition. You can walk along paths through the organic rice paddies to discover the secrets of cultivation and the importance of biodiversity, participate in creative workshops designed for families, and learn about the theme of resilient rice—those varieties capable of adapting to climate change and more sustainable agriculture.
As this day is designed to provide an intimate experience of farm life, access is limited and requires mandatory booking. It is a perfect occasion for those who love quality food and wine, slow tourism, and the rural landscapes of Piedmont, away from large, crowded events. The setting is the Vercelli rice-growing plain, where flooded rice paddies create mirrors of water as far as the eye can see.
The 2026 edition of the Piedmontese Rice Bio-District Day will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM, at Cascina Teglio, in Rovasenda in the province of Vercelli. An immersive day dedicated to discovering organic rice and the biodiversity of the Baraggia, with a program that alternates outdoor moments among the rice paddies and activities inside the farm.
