An ancient tradition on Lake Santa Massenza

The Pessati Festival is one of the most cherished events in the Valle dei Laghi, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. It takes place in Santa Massenza, a tiny and picturesque village within the municipality of Vallelaghi (Province of Trento), nestled on the shores of the lake of the same name, which is connected by a canal to the nearby Lake Toblino. Here, in Piazza San Vigilio, the festival celebrates a culinary product deeply rooted in the local rural and lake-based culture.

What are 'pessati'?

Pessati are lake fish caught and dried according to local tradition, once known as pessati d'arzent (silver fish) for their shimmering color. This ancient preservation method, typical of Trentino's lakes, has made dried fish a symbol of the gastronomic identity of Santa Massenza, a village historically linked to fishing, olive cultivation, and grappa production. During the festival, the fish are served according to age-old recipes, offering a taste of centuries of life on the lake.

Flavors and conviviality

The heart of the festival lies in the food stalls organized by the Pro Loco Santa Massenza, offering pessati alongside polenta, other lake fish dishes, and the wines of the Valle dei Laghi, ranging from Nosiola to the celebrated Trentino Vino Santo. The square, dedicated to Saint Vigilius, comes alive throughout the day with families, children, and visitors from neighboring towns, creating a genuine and intimate village atmosphere.

Music and local charm

Beyond the gastronomy, the Pessati Festival offers musical entertainment and moments of joy for all ages. The setting is the enchanting Lake Santa Massenza, one of the most poetic spots in the Garda Trentino area—so much so that historian Antonio Pranzelores once dubbed the village the little Nice of Trentino. Strolling through the vineyards and along the lake shore between tastings is an essential part of the experience.

A free spring event

The event is traditionally held in May, spanning an entire weekend, and offers free admission. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Trentino, far from the main tourist circuits, and to savor a tradition that continues to unite the community of Vallelaghi.
