A day of nature, Ciociaria flavours, and children's workshops in Pescosolido
Pescosolido is a small town in the province of Frosinone, in the Lazio region, nestled on the slopes of the mountains that enclose the Comino Valley and overlooking the Vallone Lacerno, one of the most evocative natural gorges in the entire Ciociaria region. It is precisely from this heritage of water, rock, and woodland that Pescofest was born, the event with which the Pro Loco Pescosolido invites residents and visitors to rediscover the village in a single day, from dawn until dusk.
The festival's format is unique and sets it apart from the many local food festivals in the area: it doesn't start at noon, but in the early hours of the morning. The trekking to Vallone Lacerno begins before the sun is high, to cross the gorges during the coolest and quietest time of day; a little later, a walk through the vineyards and olive groves accompanies participants along the terraces surrounding the town, where olives and wine grapes are still cultivated using techniques passed down from generation to generation.
By midday, the focus shifts to the historic centre, in the Via Portella area, where the food and wine stands open. Here, Ciociaria cuisine is presented without filters: handmade pasta, grilled meats, locally produced cheeses, extra virgin olive oil, and local wines. The public eats outdoors, among the alleys and small squares of the village, in an atmosphere of a local village feast rather than a tourist event.
Pescofest reserves an important part of the programme for families. In the afternoon, free workshops designed for children are held: one dedicated to cheesemaking, to understand how milk becomes cheese, and one on the world of bees, with stories about the hive and the beekeeper's work. The children's day ends with the Pirate Bubble Show, the pirate-themed soap bubble performance that has become one of the most anticipated moments of the event.
Pescofest is a young event: the first editions were held in the spring of previous years, before the Pro Loco chose to permanently link it to June 2nd, the Republic Day. The choice is not accidental: the long weekend at the beginning of June brings those who have emigrated elsewhere back to the village and allows the festival to become a moment of homecoming, as well as a warm welcome for outside visitors.
Those arriving for Pescofest can easily extend their visit to the surroundings. Pescosolido is located a few kilometres from Sora and at the gates of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, in an area where stone villages, springs, and mountain trails coexist with a still-vibrant agricultural tradition. It is the lesser-known Lazio, far from the circuits of Rome, and the Pro Loco festival is perhaps the best introduction to it.
For its third edition, Pescofest confirmed its placement on Republic Day, June 2nd. The Pro Loco Pescosolido built a programme that covered the entire day, alternating outdoor activities, gastronomy, and entertainment for families in the historic centre of the village, in the province of Frosinone.
The opening moment was the trekking at dawn in the Vallone Lacerno, followed by a walk through vineyards and olive groves. From 12:00 PM, food and wine stands opened with specialties from the Ciociaria land, while the afternoon was dedicated to the little ones with free workshops on cheesemaking and the world of bees, leading up to the final Pirate Bubble Show. Participation in the activities was free.
By car: take the Sora exit from the Ferentino-Sora highway, then follow signs for Pescosolido (about 8 km). From Rome, take the A1 motorway to Frosinone and continue on the highway towards Sora, for a total of about 2 hours. The nearest train station is Sora, on the Avezzano-Roccasecca line, which is connected to the village by local bus services.
The historic centre is pedestrianised during the event: please park in the designated areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
Admission to the event is free, as are the children's workshops and guided excursions. You pay for what you consume at the food and wine stands.
For the morning trekking to Vallone Lacerno, hiking shoes and water are required; the departure is very early, at dawn. Booking with the Pro Loco is recommended for the excursion.
