Christmas in Alatri in the heart of Ciociaria: markets, nativity scenes, illuminations, and concerts
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
From December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, until Epiphany, the historic center of Alatri (Province of Frosinone, Lazio) lights up for the "Christmas in the Center - Follow the Star" festival, a project promoted by the Municipality of Alatri and curated by the local Pro Loco. For an entire month, this Ciociaria village becomes a grand open-air nativity scene, filled with lights, music, crafts, and folk traditions.
The heart of the event is the Artistic Nativity Scene Exhibition, hosted in the evocative Cloister of San Francesco, in Piazza Regina Margherita. Now in its twentieth year, the exhibition showcases nativity scenes created by artisans, associations, schools, and parishes, remaining open throughout the holiday period until Epiphany.
Along Viale Duca d'Aosta, you will find Christmas markets with wooden stalls dedicated to handicrafts, typical Ciociaria products, and gift ideas, all framed by lights that illuminate the streets and squares. Children can visit Santa's House to drop off their letters, while the center also hosts an ice skating rink, food and wine tastings, and numerous recreational activities.
The calendar features concerts and performances spread across the churches and squares of the center: from the New Year's Concert in the Cathedral of San Paolo Apostolo to performances by the town band and choirs, and from dance shows in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore to musical events in the Church of San Francesco. There is no shortage of workshops, games, and initiatives designed for families and children.
The setting is Alatri, one of the most fascinating villages in Ciociaria, famous for its imposing megalithic acropolis (the Civita) surrounded by cyclopean walls. During the holidays, the charm of its millennial history blends with the Christmas atmosphere, making a visit a unique experience for both adults and children.
The Municipality of Alatri and the Pro Loco have not yet released the schedule for the 2026 edition of "Christmas in the Center - Follow the Star." The event is held every year during the Christmas period in the historic center of the Ciociaria town, usually from December 8th until Epiphany: dates and the program will be updated as soon as they are available.
Alatri can be reached by car via the A1 motorway, taking the Frosinone exit, or by train to Frosinone station, continuing by bus toward the center. The historic center is largely pedestrianized during peak days.
Access to the markets, illuminations, and the Artistic Nativity Scene Exhibition is free; some activities for children may require a small registration fee. For the updated program, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Alatri and the Pro Loco Alatri.
