During the suspended time of the holiday season, the village of Opi, in the province of L'Aquila, glows with lights and music. The Magical Christmas of Opi is the event program organized by the Pro Loco Opi APS in collaboration with the local municipality, accompanying residents and visitors throughout the festive period, from Christmas Eve until mid-January. It is an invitation to experience the magic of Christmas together through concerts, musical performances, and festive moments where tradition and beauty intertwine.
Opi is a small town perched on a rocky spur at an altitude of approximately 1,250 meters, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. It is part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy circuit and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Its narrow streets, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the views over snow-capped mountains provide a picturesque backdrop for winter celebrations: under the snow, the medieval historic center becomes a natural nativity scene.
Music is the common thread of the program. Throughout the holidays, a series of concerts and musical events are designed for both adults and children, offering opportunities for gathering, listening, and wonder. Alongside the performances, there are plenty of moments dedicated to younger guests, with activities and entertainment for children and families that enliven the village squares.
The calendar embraces the highlights of the Abruzzo winter: New Year's Eve celebrations, the arrival of the Befana, and the long-awaited Polenta Opiana torchlight procession, where, to the sound of Christmas melodies and the warmth of a large bonfire, one can enjoy traditional polenta with a glass of mulled wine and a cup of hot chocolate. The celebrations conclude with the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in mid-January, featuring ritual fires and traditional rural flavors.
Located between Opi and nearby Pescasseroli, the event is also known as Lights and Traditions: Enchanted Christmas. It is an opportunity to discover the hospitality of the Abruzzo mountains, local gastronomy, and the intimate atmosphere of an authentic village, far from mass tourism, where the holidays retain a genuine, communal spirit.
The calendar for the Magical Christmas of Opi 2026 has not yet been published. As in previous years, the Pro Loco Opi APS is expected to offer concerts, musical events, and activities for children in the town's historic center, alongside the traditional moments of the Christmas holidays in the Abruzzo National Park. It is recommended to check the Pro Loco channels for updates on dates and the program.
Opi can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit), continuing towards the Val di Sangro and the National Park. The nearest train station is Avezzano, which connects to the upper valley via bus service. In winter, it is recommended to check road conditions and ensure your vehicle is equipped with snow chains or winter tires.

Warm clothing is essential: Opi is located at 1,250 meters and winter temperatures can be quite cold. Numerous accommodations in the village and in Pescasseroli allow you to stay in the Park during the holidays.
