About Magical Christmas of Opi

The Magical Christmas of Opi brings one of Italy's most beautiful villages to life throughout the holiday season. In this small town perched at 1,250 meters in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the local Pro Loco association hosts concerts, musical events, and celebrations for all ages. The historic center fills with lights, tradition, and conviviality, highlighted by the anticipated Polenta Opiana torchlight procession, New Year's and Epiphany celebrations, and the traditional bonfires of Saint Anthony the Abbot.

Christmas in the village of Opi

During the suspended time of the holiday season, the village of Opi, in the province of L'Aquila, glows with lights and music. The Magical Christmas of Opi is the event program organized by the Pro Loco Opi APS in collaboration with the local municipality, accompanying residents and visitors throughout the festive period, from Christmas Eve until mid-January. It is an invitation to experience the magic of Christmas together through concerts, musical performances, and festive moments where tradition and beauty intertwine.

An enchanted village at 1,250 meters

Opi is a small town perched on a rocky spur at an altitude of approximately 1,250 meters, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. It is part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy circuit and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Its narrow streets, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the views over snow-capped mountains provide a picturesque backdrop for winter celebrations: under the snow, the medieval historic center becomes a natural nativity scene.

Concerts and musical events

Music is the common thread of the program. Throughout the holidays, a series of concerts and musical events are designed for both adults and children, offering opportunities for gathering, listening, and wonder. Alongside the performances, there are plenty of moments dedicated to younger guests, with activities and entertainment for children and families that enliven the village squares.

New Year, Epiphany, and tradition

The calendar embraces the highlights of the Abruzzo winter: New Year's Eve celebrations, the arrival of the Befana, and the long-awaited Polenta Opiana torchlight procession, where, to the sound of Christmas melodies and the warmth of a large bonfire, one can enjoy traditional polenta with a glass of mulled wine and a cup of hot chocolate. The celebrations conclude with the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in mid-January, featuring ritual fires and traditional rural flavors.

A Christmas to experience in Abruzzo

Located between Opi and nearby Pescasseroli, the event is also known as Lights and Traditions: Enchanted Christmas. It is an opportunity to discover the hospitality of the Abruzzo mountains, local gastronomy, and the intimate atmosphere of an authentic village, far from mass tourism, where the holidays retain a genuine, communal spirit.

Magical Christmas of Opi — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of The Magical Christmas of Opi will return, as per tradition, to bring the Abruzzo village to life during the holiday season. Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Pro Loco Opi: celebrations typically kick off in the days leading up to Christmas and continue until mid-January, featuring concerts, family events, and the village's traditional appointments.

The calendar for the Magical Christmas of Opi 2026 has not yet been published. As in previous years, the Pro Loco Opi APS is expected to offer concerts, musical events, and activities for children in the town's historic center, alongside the traditional moments of the Christmas holidays in the Abruzzo National Park. It is recommended to check the Pro Loco channels for updates on dates and the program.
