Excursions, mycology workshops, and forest flavors in the village of Santopadre, Ciociaria
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Mycology Day and Mushroom Festival in Santopadre is a late September event that blends nature, knowledge, and gastronomy. For one full day, this small village in the province of Frosinone becomes a meeting point for mycology enthusiasts, hikers, and food lovers, with a program ranging from morning forest hikes to a mushroom-themed culinary trail.
Santopadre is a hilltop town in Ciociaria, perched at an altitude of over 700 meters between the Liri Valley and the hills overlooking Arpino and Roccasecca. The village, home to a few hundred residents, retains a compact historic center and a strong connection to the surrounding territory: woods, chestnut groves, and trails that become ideal terrain for mushroom foraging in autumn. It is precisely this natural heritage that the event aims to promote, showcasing the village beyond the borders of the Frosinone province and the Lazio region.
The 'scientific' heart of the day is the mycology component. The 2025 edition program included:
This approach distinguishes the event from simple food festivals: before sitting down to eat, participants are invited to truly understand the forest floor, with the guidance of those who study and frequent it all year round.
Alongside the study and walking sessions, there is, of course, the celebration. The Mushroom Festival offers a culinary trail where mushrooms are the absolute stars: tastings and local traditional dishes prepared with local mushrooms, following Ciociaria's rustic recipes. It is an opportunity to sample the authentic flavors of this land in a convivial village atmosphere, among the streets and squares of the historic center.
The event is part of the Autumn Paths, a calendar of initiatives through which the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Santopadre enliven the autumn season, highlighting the town's typical products and popular traditions. Santopadre dedicates several events throughout the year to the fruits of its land: from the summer black truffle celebrated in July to wild asparagus in spring, and finally the mushrooms that take center stage in autumn. A small village that has made seasonal flavors its tourist identity.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Santopadre in collaboration with the municipal administration and takes place over a single day, traditionally a Sunday in late September. Activities begin in the morning with the meeting for the excursion and continue throughout the day with expert workshops and the culinary trail. For updated information on dates and the program, it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Santopadre or follow the Pro Loco channels.
For 2026, the Mycology Day and Mushroom Festival in Santopadre has not yet been officially confirmed: at the moment, no dates or program have been published. The previous edition took place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, and it is therefore reasonable to expect that the 2026 event will also be scheduled for a Sunday in late September, as part of the 'Autumn Paths' promoted by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Santopadre.
The proven format includes an entire day dedicated to the world of mushrooms: a guided morning excursion in the local woods, workshops and in-depth sessions with mycology experts, and a culinary trail where you can taste mushroom-based dishes according to Ciociaria tradition. As soon as the organizers release official information, this page will be updated with dates, times, and the full program.
By car: from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Ceprano or Pontecorvo exits, then follow signs for Arpino and Santopadre along the provincial roads. The village is about 20 minutes from Roccasecca.
By train: the nearest station is Roccasecca, on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line; from there, you must continue by car or taxi (about 10 km of mountain road).
For those participating in the morning mycology excursion, trekking shoes and clothing suitable for forest trails are recommended. The day starts early: the 2025 edition meeting was set for the early morning hours. Santopadre is a mountain village: even in late September, temperatures can be cool.
