The patronal feast of Villa Scontrone, in the heart of the Alto Sangro
The Feast of the Madonna del Carmine is the most anticipated event of the summer in Villa Scontrone, the lower hamlet of the municipality of Scontrone, a small mountain village in the Alto Sangro area of the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. The Madonna del Carmine is the patron saint of Villa Scontrone, and her feast day on July 16th marks one of the most significant moments in the village's religious and community calendar.
Life in Villa Scontrone revolves around the charming little square that opens up in front of the church of Santa Maria del Carmine: this is the focal point for the festival's rites and celebrations. During the feast days, the small center, nestled at an altitude of over one thousand meters along the Sangro valley, fills with residents and those who have moved away but return for the occasion, in a ritual of returning to one's roots typical of Apennine villages.
The highlight is the procession with the statue of the Madonna del Carmine, carried on shoulders through the streets of the village and accompanied by the faithful and the brass band. The day is marked by solemn masses and liturgical rites specific to the Carmelite Marian devotion, which has been rooted for centuries in this stretch of the Apennines. Alongside the religious aspect, the secular festival unfolds with moments of conviviality, music, and stands that bring the evenings to life.
The municipality of Scontrone, which includes the two centers of Scontrone and Villa Scontrone, originated in the 10th century as a fortified center to defend the valley. The territory preserves a rich heritage of religious traditions that punctuate the entire year, from the feast of Saints John and Paul at the end of June to the summer celebrations. Immersed in the nature of the Alto Sangro, on the borders of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, Scontrone is also known for its typical products โ honey, cured meats, and cheeses โ which are perfect for enjoying during the festive days.
The 2026 edition of the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Carmine will take place in Villa Scontrone on July 15th and 16th, according to the official communication from the Municipality of Scontrone. The patronal feast renews this year the deep bond between the community and its Virgin of Mount Carmel, through religious rites and moments of conviviality in the small mountain village of the province of L'Aquila.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. According to tradition, the two days of July 15th and 16th will feature solemn masses in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, the procession with the statue of the Madonna del Carmine through the streets of Villa Scontrone accompanied by the band, and moments of secular celebration in the evening in the village square. The complete calendar with times and events will be released in the weeks preceding the recurrence by the organizers and the parish.
