The quintessential summer community festival in the smallest village of the Abruzzo National Park

The Contrade Festival is among the most popular and beloved events in the summer calendar of Civitella Alfedena, a tiny municipality in the province of L'Aquila and the smallest village in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. With just over 300 inhabitants, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the southern shore of Lake Barrea at an altitude of approximately 1,123 meters, the village experiences this festival as a moment of strong cohesion, where the entire community comes together to celebrate its identity.
The festival focuses on the folklore and popular traditions of the mountain village, with the active involvement of the entire population. It is an occasion where residents rediscover local customs and share them with visitors among the characteristic paved alleys, ancient portals, and stone houses of the historic center, where 17th and 18th-century palaces, the medieval tower that serves as the village symbol, and the Church of San Nicola still stand.
Experiencing the Contrade Festival also means discovering one of the most evocative villages in inland Abruzzo. Civitella Alfedena is famous for its Wolf Wildlife Area, where it is possible to observe the Apennine wolf in a semi-wild environment, and it serves as a gateway to the Camosciara and the trails of the Val di Rose, the realm of the Abruzzo chamois. Lake Barrea, the ancient beech forests (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and mountain panoramas provide a natural backdrop for the festival.
Like every Abruzzo village festival, the Contrade Festival is an opportunity to taste traditional mountain cuisine: chitarra pasta with sheep ragรน, wild boar pappardelle, local cheeses such as marzolina and sheep's milk ricotta, grilled meats, and typical local desserts. These genuine flavors tell the story of the pastoral culture of the upper Sangro Valley.
The Contrade Festival is part of a rich summer calendar in Civitella Alfedena that also includes the patronal feast of Saint Lucy, the feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari, and other folklore and folk music events.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Contrade Festival have not yet been announced. Based on previous years, the event is expected to take place in July, as part of Civitella Alfedena's rich summer calendar. The detailed program will be published by the Municipality and the organizers later in the season.
As per tradition, the festival is expected to celebrate the village's identity and folklore with the involvement of the entire community, amidst the alleys of the historic center in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
Civitella Alfedena (AQ) can be reached by car along the SR 83 Marsicana road, which crosses the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park near Lake Barrea. The village is just a few kilometers from Barrea and Villetta Barrea. The nearest train station is Alfedena-Scontrone, on the Sulmona-Isernia line; from there, you can continue by car or local transport.
The festival enlivens the historic center of the village, amidst its stone alleys and town squares.
The village is at an altitude of over 1,100 meters: even in summer, evenings can be cool, so a warm layer is recommended. Parking spaces in the center are limited; it is best to park in the designated areas at the entrance to the village. Combine the festival with a visit to the Wolf Wildlife Area and a hike in the Camosciara.
