The patron saints of Alfedena celebrated on the second Sunday of July
Every year, on the second Sunday of July, the small village of Alfedena, located in the province of L'Aquila in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, pauses to honor its two patron saints: Santa Maria Salomè, one of the pious women who followed Christ, and San Pietro da Verona (Saint Peter Martyr, a Dominican friar who lived in the 13th century). It is the most anticipated date of the Alfedena summer, drawing back both locals and those who have moved away to the cities, all returning home for these days of celebration.
The heart of the celebration is the procession which, following the solemn mass, winds through the streets of the historic center with the statues of the saints carried on shoulders. The parade moves through the stone alleys of the village, decorated for the occasion, accompanied by a brass band and the devout participation of the population. A key landmark is the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, a national monument since 1902: built in the 13th century and rebuilt after the damage of the Second World War, it houses mosaics by Fausto Conti from the 1950s and 60s, including a depiction dedicated to Saint Peter Martyr.
Alongside the religious observances, the patronal feast has its secular and popular side: festive lights illuminate the squares and streets, the evening comes alive with live music and performances in the square, and the day concludes with a fireworks display that paints the sky above the village and the surrounding mountains. It is the classic rhythm of an Abruzzo village festival, where devotion, conviviality, and tradition intertwine.
Alfedena stands at over 900 meters above sea level, on the banks of the Rio Torto and at the foot of the Meta and Monte Greco massifs. The village occupies the site of ancient Aufidena, one of the most important Samnite cities, of which the acropolis with its polygonal walls and a vast Italic necropolis remain. Those arriving for the festival will find much more than a religious celebration: a stone village overlooking the mountains of the Park, an ideal starting point for excursions towards Monte Meta and the valleys of the Alto Sangro.
The Alfedena Patronal Feast returns, as every year, on the second Sunday of July: in 2026, the event is scheduled for Sunday, July 12. The program follows the traditional format of the feast, with religious rites in honor of Santa Maria Salomè and San Pietro da Verona, the procession of the patron saints' statues through the village streets, and moments of celebration in the square with music and fireworks.
The detailed program with the times of celebrations and shows is usually released by the Municipality and the parish in the days immediately preceding the event. Those wishing to participate can inquire at the Municipality of Alfedena.
Alfedena is located in the province of L'Aquila, in the Alto Sangro area. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Pescina-Celano exit or continuing towards the Val di Sangro) and the SS17/SS83 state roads. The Alfedena-Scontrone railway station is on the Sulmona-Isernia-Carpinone line.
The festival is held every year on the second Sunday of July. In 2026, the date is Sunday, July 12.
Events in the square, the procession, and the fireworks are free and open to everyone.
The village is at an altitude of over 900 meters: even in mid-summer, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. For the detailed program, it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Alfedena or the parish in the days leading up to the festival.
