The Madonna di Monte Tranquillo Festival is the most iconic patronal feast of Pescasseroli, a village in the province of L'Aquila, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Every year, on the last Sunday of July, the entire community gathers around the Black Madonna, co-patron of the territory, housed in the sanctuary that stands at 1,597 meters above sea level on the Monte Tranquillo pass, about ten kilometers from the village.
The highlight of the festival is the procession, one of the most evocative in the Abruzzo Apennines. At dawn, the parade departs from the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and climbs along the mountain paths toward the sanctuary. It is characterized by extraordinary equestrian participation: about a hundred horses led by riders, including children, accompany the statue of the Madonna along with the Alpini Fanfare and hundreds of faithful. Once at the summit, a solemn mass is celebrated around noon; afterward, the community pauses for a picnic in the meadows surrounding the sanctuary.
In the early afternoon, around 4:30 PM, the 'Madonnina' descends back toward the village. The procession crosses the main street of Pescasseroli, where the crowd awaits the arrival of the statue with emotion, carried on shoulders and followed by the faithful in prayer. One gesture makes this festival unique: all participants carry branches, which are raised to "greet the Madonnina" and thank her for the blessing received. The procession concludes at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul with the final religious service.
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Tranquillo has very ancient origins: the primitive church was built at the beginning of the 12th century by Saint Berardo, Bishop of the Marsi, and rebuilt in 1956 following damage from the 1915 earthquake and the war. Tradition holds that the venerated statue of the Black Madonna arrived from Foggia to escape the iconoclasts; the current image is a copy made in 1982, after the original was stolen in 1980. Over the centuries, a deep devotion has layered around this figure, which still binds the inhabitants of Pescasseroli to their mountain today.
More than just a religious appointment, the Madonna di Monte Tranquillo Festival is a collective ritual that strengthens the village's identity. It is attended by residents, emigrants returning for the occasion, and numerous visitors drawn by the charm of a procession that unites spirituality, alpine landscapes, and the agro-pastoral culture of the Marsica. In a town that thrives on summer and mountain tourism, this day remains the authentic heart of the Abruzzo summer.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna di Monte Tranquillo Festival does not yet have an official announced date. As per established tradition, the patronal feast of Pescasseroli is held on the last Sunday of July with the characteristic horseback procession to the sanctuary at 1,597 meters altitude. The detailed program (times of the procession, mass at the sanctuary, and return to the village) will be communicated by the parish of Saints Peter and Paul closer to the event.
Pescasseroli can be reached by car via the SS83 Marsicana; the nearest motorway exit is Pescina (A25 Torano-Pescara), about 40 km away. The Monte Tranquillo sanctuary can be reached on foot along the path starting from the village (about 10 km, challenging elevation gain).
The festival is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of July. The procession leaves early in the morning; mass at the sanctuary is around noon, and the return to the village is in the afternoon, around 4:30 PM.
Wear hiking boots and bring water for the ascent. The event is free to attend. In high season, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance in the village's numerous B&Bs and hotels.
