The traditional pasta and beans festival of Castel di Sangro, in the heart of the Alto Sangro valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Cazzarielle e Fasciuole Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Castel di Sangro, a town in the Alto Sangro valley, in the province of L'Aquila, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains. Every year in August, the historic center comes alive around Piazza del Mercato (now Piazza D'Avalos), where food stalls serve the dish that gives the event its name.
Cazzarielle are a type of handmade pasta typical of local peasant tradition, served with fasciuole, which means beans in the local dialect. It is a simple yet hearty pasta and beans dish, an authentic expression of mountain 'cucina povera' passed down through generations. Alongside the main dish, the stalls offer other local specialties and a dedicated area for traditional desserts.
The event is organized by the AmoRosa Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Castel di Sangro and the collaboration of the Alto Sangro Civil Protection Group and the local Scout group. Locals describe it as the only truly authentic local festival left: a collective effort to keep a tradition alive that has spanned over thirty editions, offering a varied menu accessible to everyone, while fully respecting the local food and wine culture.
The evening takes place outdoors, amidst the streets and squares of the center, accompanying the tasting with live music and festive moments. The festival is a precious opportunity for residents and visitors to gather around the table, rediscovering the genuine flavors of inland Abruzzo in a convivial evening setting. In case of bad weather, the event is traditionally moved to the local sports hall.
Situated at an altitude of over 800 meters, bordering Molise and just a few kilometers from the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, Castel di Sangro is an ideal stop for those who want to combine nature, mountains, and gastronomic traditions. The Cazzarielle e Fasciuole Festival is the best way to discover the most authentic identity of this corner of Abruzzo.
The 2026 Cazzarielle e Fasciuole Festival is expected to renew the summer appointment with the signature dish of local tradition in Castel di Sangro, in the province of L'Aquila. The official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released: the event is usually held in the first half of August in Piazza del Mercato. We recommend consulting the AmoRosa Association and Municipality channels for updates.
Castel di Sangro can be reached by car via the SS17 and SS652 Fondovalle Sangro roads; it is served by the train station on the Sulmona-Isernia line. The festival takes place in Piazza del Mercato (Piazza D'Avalos), in the historic center.
The event takes place in the evening, with food stalls opening approximately between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Admission to the area is free; you only pay for tastings at individual stalls, with affordable prices.
In case of bad weather, the event moves to the sports hall. We recommend clothing suitable for cool mountain evenings.
