Celebrating the patron saint in the smallest village of the Abruzzo National Park
In the municipality of Civitella Alfedena, located in the Province of L'Aquila in the heart of Abruzzo, the Saint Lucy Patronal Festival is the most cherished event of the summer. Unlike the traditional December 13th date, the martyr is celebrated here on the second Sunday of July: an ancient choice that allows the mountain village to welcome pilgrims and emigrant families returning home for the occasion.
Civitella Alfedena is the smallest inhabited center within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and proudly holds the Orange Flag from the Italian Touring Club. Nestled at an altitude of over 1,100 meters above the southern shore of Lake Barrea, the village preserves narrow alleys, ancient stone houses, a 14th-century tower, and the Church of San Nicola di Bari. The festival transforms this alpine setting into a natural stage for folk traditions.
The heart of the devotion is the Sanctuary Church of Saint Lucy, which stands on a hill a short distance from the village, overlooking the Sangro Valley and Lake Barrea. The cult of the saint is deeply rooted in the area and attracts faithful from neighboring towns such as Scanno, San Donato Val Comino, and Settefrati.
The festivities, organized by the Civitella Alfedena Festival Committee, span two days, featuring religious celebrations, the procession in honor of the patron saint, and moments of folk celebration filled with singing, dancing, music, and stalls along the village streets. It is an opportunity to rediscover the Abruzzo mountain community, its hospitality, and local flavors, from alpine dairy products to mountain-grown aromatic herbs.
Participating in the festival means experiencing the most authentic side of Abruzzo: the spirituality of the sanctuary, the life of a small Apennine village, and the proximity to iconic sites like the Wolf Wildlife Area, the first Italian facility dedicated to observing the Apennine wolf. A community-focused event, perfect for those seeking tradition, silence, and mountain landscapes.
In 2026, the Saint Lucy Patronal Festival returns to Civitella Alfedena on the second Sunday of July: the municipal calendar indicates the dates of July 12-13. The detailed program, including times and musical events, is traditionally released by the Festival Committee in the preceding weeks. The core moments of the festival are confirmed: the procession in honor of the patron saint and the evenings of singing and dancing along the village alleys, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
Civitella Alfedena (AQ) is located about 50 km from L'Aquila and 170 km from Rome, on the southern shore of Lake Barrea, at an altitude of over 1,100 meters. By car, it can be reached from the A25 motorway (Pescina/Cocullo exit), continuing towards the Sangro Valley and Barrea, or via the Castel di Sangro route. The village is small: it is recommended to leave your car in the parking lots at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
The festival takes place on the second Sunday of July, including the preceding Saturday. Free admission.
