In the town of Tricase, in the province of Lecce and in the heart of lower Salento, the San Rocco Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer season. Traditionally celebrated in mid-August, shortly after the feast of the patron saint San Vito, it combines the religious dimension of popular devotion with the convivial atmosphere of a great street festival, drawing locals, returning emigrants, and tourists vacationing in the Capo di Leuca area.
Saint Roch, a pilgrim and wonder-worker invoked against the plague and epidemics, enjoys deep and rooted devotion throughout Salento. In Tricase, his cult is guarded by the Confraternita San Rocco – Santa Lucia, which organizes the festivities every year around the small chapel dedicated to the saint and the nearby Piazza Santa Lucia, which transforms into the pulsating heart of the celebration for the occasion.
The festivities are preceded by a novena of preparation, with mass celebrated every morning in the chapel. On the day of the festival, the community gathers for numerous masses held in the early hours of the morning, while the evening is dedicated to the solemn procession with the statue of the saint through the streets of the district, followed by an outdoor Eucharistic celebration. Devotion intertwines with the typical signs of a Salento patronal festival: illuminations, the ringing of bells, and the presence of the faithful along the processional route.
Alongside the religious aspect, the San Rocco Festival offers the classic civil program of Salento village festivals. There is no shortage of brass band concerts, with renowned touring bands enlivening the square, the fireworks display that closes the main evening, and musical nights featuring Salento pizzica and folk music groups. Artistic illuminations and stalls complete the festive atmosphere, making the event a gathering point for all ages.
The San Rocco Festival in Tricase represents a precious piece of the Salento patronal festival calendar, where popular faith and local musical traditions merge. For those visiting Capo di Leuca in August, it is an opportunity to experience authentic Salento festive culture up close, between the sacred and the profane, in a town as rich in history as Tricase.
The 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival in Tricase (LE) is expected, as per tradition, in mid-August around the San Rocco Chapel and Piazza Santa Lucia. As of the publication date of this entry, the official 2026 program has not yet been released by the Confraternita San Rocco – Santa Lucia. In continuity with previous years, the preparatory novena, the solemn evening procession, the fireworks display, and evenings of brass band music and Salento pizzica are expected. Information will be updated as soon as the dates and final calendar are announced.
The festivities take place in Tricase (LE), in the area of the San Rocco Chapel and Piazza Santa Lucia, with the procession winding through the streets of the district.
By car: from Lecce, take the SS 275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca until you reach Tricase. By train: the Tricase station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Lecce. The nearest airport is Brindisi-Casale.
The festival takes place in public spaces and is free to attend. Religious celebrations and evening shows in the square are open to everyone.
August is peak season in Salento: it is advisable to book accommodation in Tricase or the nearby seaside towns well in advance. Don't miss a walk through the historic center and a visit to the nearby Capo di Leuca coast.
