The patronal feast of San Cassiano in the heart of Salento
In the heart of lower Salento, the small Municipality of San Cassiano, in the province of Lecce, dedicates three days every summer to its patron saint. The San Rocco Festival is the most anticipated event of the year: a time when the community comes together to renew an ancient devotion and share in the joy of the celebration. San Rocco, traditionally invoked as a protector against illnesses and epidemics, is the town's patron, and his figure has accompanied the religious and civic life of San Cassiano for generations.
As in the most authentic Puglian patronal feasts, the program blends religious and secular dimensions. The celebrations open with solemn masses and prayer in the parish church, culminating in the solemn procession through the town streets, during which the statue of San Rocco is carried on the shoulders of the faithful, accompanied by a brass band and the warmth of the community.
As evening falls, San Cassiano lights up: traditional luminarie (light displays) brighten the streets and squares, while the stage comes alive with concerts, folk performances, and Salento pizzica groups, the captivating dance that symbolizes the identity of Salento. Over the years, the festival has hosted well-known artists from the Italian music scene, drawing large crowds to the square.
The food and wine dimension is not to be missed: stalls set up along the festival route offer traditional Salento specialties, from pittule and panzerotti to grilled meat and typical desserts, all accompanied by fine Salento wine. Craft stalls and local products complete the festive atmosphere.
Closing the festivities, as tradition dictates, is the fireworks display: the fireworks paint the night sky of Salento and salute the patron saint, offering residents and visitors a breathtaking finale.
The San Rocco Festival represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is the occasion when San Cassiano, in Puglia, shows the most genuine face of its tradition. For those visiting Salento in mid-August, it is an authentic experience of community, faith, and popular joy.
In 2026, San Cassiano once again renews its devotion to its patron saint, San Rocco, with the traditional patronal feast scheduled from August 18th to 20th. The religious heart of the event remains the solemn procession through the town streets, while the evenings come alive with light displays, live music, Salento pizzica performances, and food stalls. The complete artistic program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers.
San Cassiano is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the network of roads connecting the towns of the Salento hinterland; rail travel is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est, while the reference airports are Brindisi-Salento and, further north, Bari.
The festival takes place every year from August 18th to 20th.
Access to religious celebrations and events in the square is free.
