The building dates back to the late 16th century and retains, in its austere architecture, the memory of the ancient fortresses of the Terra d'Otranto, with defensive machicolations still visible along the perimeter. Inside, the small nave with its star-vaulted ceiling houses a painting depicting the Assumption among angels and saints, attributed to the painter Paolo Finoglio, alongside a statue of the Assunta and a figure of Saint Pantaleon carved in Lecce stone. The church was elevated to a Sanctuary in 1950, a holy year, to mark the proclamation of the dogma of the Assumption.

The festival traditionally takes place between August 14th and 15th, days dedicated to the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. The religious program includes solemn liturgical services, moments of prayer, and the active participation of the parish community, accompanied by traditional festivities, music, and conviviality.
