The Ferragosto festival around the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Assunta in Tricase
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Salento summer, the village of Marina Serra, a seaside hamlet of the Municipality of Tricase in the Province of Lecce, celebrates the Feast of the Madonna Assunta. It is one of the most cherished religious traditions along this stretch of the Adriatic coast, drawing residents, vacationers, and pilgrims to the small sanctuary overlooking the sea.
The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Assunta, also known as the Madonna della Serra. The building dates back to the late 16th century and retains, in its austere architecture, the memory of the ancient fortresses of the Terra d'Otranto, with defensive machicolations still visible along the perimeter. Inside, the small nave with its star-vaulted ceiling houses a painting depicting the Assumption among angels and saints, attributed to the painter Paolo Finoglio, alongside a statue of the Assunta and a figure of Saint Pantaleon carved in Lecce stone. The church was elevated to a Sanctuary in 1950, a holy year, to mark the proclamation of the dogma of the Assumption.
The festival traditionally takes place between August 14th and 15th, days dedicated to the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. The religious program includes solemn liturgical services, moments of prayer, and the active participation of the parish community, accompanied by traditional festivities, music, and conviviality. The sanctuary, a destination for constant pilgrimages throughout the year, experiences its most profound moment of devotion during these days.
The charm of the festival is amplified by the landscape in which it unfolds. The sanctuary stands on a panoramic terrace overlooking the Strait of Otranto, in one of the most picturesque seaside areas of lower Salento. Nearby lies the famous natural pool of Marina Serra, a rocky cove beloved by swimmers. The Assunta festival thus unites spiritual life with summer leisure in a setting of great natural beauty.
The Feast of the Madonna Assunta in Marina Serra represents a precious piece of the rich calendar of patronal feasts and religious observances that enliven Salento and the entire Apulia region during the summer. For the Tricase area, it is an occasion of identity and gathering, weaving together popular faith, local traditions, and the warm hospitality typical of this land.
The Feast of the Madonna Assunta in Marina Serra, a hamlet of Tricase (Lecce), will return to renew the community's devotion around the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Assunta. Updated information will be provided by the parish closer to the event.
