The Salento maritime festival featuring a sunset sea procession

The Saint Nicholas Festival is the most anticipated event of the summer in Tricase Porto, a small seaside hamlet in the municipality of Tricase, in the province of Lecce, overlooking the Adriatic coast of lower Salento. Although the liturgical feast of the Saint falls in December, the community has always chosen the heart of summer — August 12th and 13th — to celebrate its patron: a choice common to many seaside towns in Puglia, allowing emigrated locals and tourists to return and participate, while taking advantage of the ideal weather for the sea procession.
Devotion here dates back to the Middle Ages, when — according to tradition — the fishermen of Tricase invoked Saint Nicholas of Myra to escape a terrible storm. The miraculous rescue prompted the community to elect the Saint as the protector of the harbor and to build a church in his honor. The celebration in its current form has been official since May 17, 1925, the day the new statue of the Saint, still at the center of the festivities today, was blessed.
The most emotional moment is the sea procession. At sunset, the statue of Saint Nicholas leaves its small church on the harbor and is solemnly embarked, kicking off an evocative parade of boats that cuts through the waves in the golden evening light. The boats sail by amidst festive sirens, while the rocks and the promenade fill with spectators: it is the identity-defining heart of a community that has lived off its relationship with the sea for centuries.
The eve, August 12th, is dedicated to the fish festival: along the harbor, stalls offer crispy fried paranza and the unmissable hot pittule, the small pockets of fried dough typical of Salento tradition. After the procession returns, the promenade lights up thanks to monumental artisanal illuminations, and the grand finale is entrusted to the fireworks display over the water, a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting in the sea that makes for an unforgettable night.
Nestled in a small cove, Tricase Porto preserves a harbor dating back to the 15th century, dominated by the parish church of Saint Nicholas and ancient coastal towers. A few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca and the most beautiful marinas of the Capo di Leuca, the hamlet is an authentic destination for those who want to discover the truest Salento, that of seaside villages and still-vibrant folk traditions.
The Saint Nicholas Festival in Tricase Porto is a staple of the Salento summer. At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: the festival traditionally takes place on August 12th and 13th, with the fish festival, the sea procession of the Saint's statue, and the final fireworks display over the harbor. This page will be updated as soon as the parish releases the official calendar.
The festivities are held in Tricase Porto (Municipality of Tricase, Province of Lecce), along the harbor and near the parish church of Saint Nicholas.
By car: Tricase Porto is about 54 km from Lecce and 12 km from Santa Maria di Leuca, accessible from the Adriatic coastal road of Salento. The nearest train stations are those of the Ferrovie del Sud Est in Tricase and neighboring towns. On the evenings of the festival, it is advisable to park early due to the large turnout.
The sea procession takes place at sunset: to enjoy the spectacle, it is best to arrive early and find a spot on the rocks or along the harbor. Do not miss the fish festival on August 12th.
