The grand patronal feast of Tricase, in the heart of lower Salento
In Tricase, an elegant town in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, devotion to Saint Vitus the Martyr has deep ancient roots. The cult received a powerful new impulse at the end of the 18th century, becoming a pillar of the city's identity, and in 1921 Saint Vitus was officially proclaimed the city's patron saint. The statue of the saint, kept in the Mother Church, is at the heart of a festival that brings the entire community together every summer in an embrace of faith and tradition, passed down from generation to generation.
The Fair and Patronal Feast is traditionally celebrated on August 9th, 10th, and 11th, transforming the historic center of Tricase into a large open-air stage. The heart of the events is Piazza Pisanelli, flanked by Piazzetta Codacci-Pisanelli, the Mother Church, and Largo Sant'Angelo. The evenings alternate between Salento folk music, brass band concerts, performances, and moments of religious reflection.
The central day, August 10th, opens with the band parading through the city streets and Holy Masses; in the afternoon, the Solemn Mass precedes one of the most evocative rituals: the symbolic presentation of the city keys to the patron saint by the mayor, followed by the solemn procession accompanied by the wind orchestra.
Upon the return of the procession to Piazza Pisanelli, the public is greeted by the spectacular "burning of the Castle", a pyrotechnic display that envelops the facade of Palazzo Gallone in a blaze of lights and colors. The festival concludes on the final night with the grand midnight fireworks display, the famous "Fochi de Santu Vitu", among the most anticipated in the entire Salento calendar.
Alongside the religious and musical dimensions, the festival also thrives on gastronomy: during the three days, the historic center fills with stalls featuring local products, while the "Cucuzza e Cadduzzu" Festival and the "Lu focu te Santu Vitu" event, featuring traditional singing, folk songs, and pizzica music, bring the peasant and musical roots of Salento back to the square.
Located just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast and the charming port of Tricase, the city is one of the most fascinating destinations in southern Salento, famous for its monumental Piazza Pisanelli, the Mother Church, and Palazzo Gallone. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover the authentic soul of this corner of Puglia, amidst faith, music, flavors, and hospitality.
