About Madonna dei Martiri

Every year, from September 7th to 9th, Molfetta pays homage to the Madonna dei Martiri, the patron saint of the city and its sailors. The heart of the festivities is the Sagra a Mare (Sea Festival) on September 8th: the statue of the Virgin is entrusted to local fishermen and placed aboard decorated trawlers, which parade through the harbor waters amidst fireworks, brass bands, and deep popular devotion. This tradition, dating back to 1395, is recognized as an Intangible Heritage of Italy.

The Patronal Feast of Molfetta

The Patronal Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri is the most significant religious and popular event in Molfetta, located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia. Each year, on September 7th, 8th, and 9th, the entire city gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna dei Martiri, also venerated as the protector of sailors and seafaring folk. The streets of the historic center are adorned with impressive illuminations along Corso Dante, while the mercantile fair brings the city to life, attracting visitors from across the province.

Origins: The 1395 Fair and the Crusaders' Icon

Molfetta's devotion dates back to the 12th century, when an icon of the Virgin arrived in the city, which was then a major maritime crossroads for pilgrims heading to the Holy Land. A basilica was built around the sacred image near the Crusaders' Hospital, and the name "Madonna dei Martiri" (Our Lady of the Martyrs) derives from the ossuary that held the remains of crusaders and pilgrims. The fair was officially established on April 24, 1395, when King Ladislaus of Durazzo granted eight days of tax-free trading: this is the origin of the traditional name "Ottava." It remains one of the oldest fairs in Apulia.

The Sagra a Mare on September 8th

The most evocative moment is the Sagra a Mare, celebrated on September 8th. The tradition dates back to 1846, when the polychrome wooden statue created by the Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Verzella (donated in 1840) was transported by sea for the first time. In the afternoon, the statue leaves the Basilica, and amidst fireworks announcing the event to the city, it is entrusted to fishermen and loaded onto trawlers decorated with flags and bunting. The boats parade through the waters in front of the harbor in a solemn maritime procession, accompanied by local bands, before returning to the quay near the Cathedral.

The Festival Program

The feast is preceded by a novena and devotional moments that animate the area in front of the basilica. The days of September 7th, 8th, and 9th feature a mix of liturgical celebrations, processions, brass band concerts in the bandstand, artistic illuminations, and grand firework displays. After the Sagra a Mare, the statue remains in the Cathedral for several days before returning to the Basilica in a final procession accompanied by further fireworks.

An Intangible Heritage of Italy

The Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri has been recognized as an Intangible Heritage of Italy by the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage. It is much more than a religious celebration: it is the expression of the identity of a seafaring community, capable of drawing back Molfetta's emigrants every year, who return to their city to relive the deep bond between faith, tradition, and the Adriatic.
