In the heart of the Caserta Matese, the municipality of Prata Sannita (Province of Caserta, Campania) celebrates its patron saint, Saint Pancras the Martyr, every year on May 12th. It is the most anticipated event of the year for this small village in the Lete valley. For a few days, the two souls of the town—the medieval core of Prata Inferiore with its castle and the upper area of Prata Superiore—reunite around the parish church in Piazza San Pancrazio. This is not a manufactured tourist event, but a genuine popular festival that has marked the community's calendar for centuries, drawing back emigrants and families scattered across Italy.
The festival begins with a prayer triduum during the three days preceding the solemnity, traditionally from May 9th to 11th, held in the parish church dedicated to the martyr. These are intimate evenings focused on catechesis and devotion, spiritually preparing the village for the patron's day. The parish is under the care of the Diocese of Alife-Caiazzo, to which Prata Sannita belongs.
The day of the solemnity begins early. Around 9:00 AM, a marching band arrives in town—over the years, local ensembles such as the "G. Puccini" Band of Pietramelara and the City of Ailano Band have performed—traveling through every street, bringing joy and announcing the feast from house to house. It is a ritual the locals know by heart, marking the official start of the day.
In the late afternoon, around 6:30 PM, a Solemn Holy Mass is celebrated in the parish church. In recent years, it has been presided over by Bishop Giacomo Cirulli, who leads the dioceses of Alife-Caiazzo, Teano-Calvi, and Sessa Aurunca, with musical accompaniment provided by local musicians.
The most distinctive moment occurs after the liturgy: the statue of Saint Pancras leaves the church to visit the families of Prata, accompanied by the faithful and the band, and escorted by the "Soldiers of Saint Pancras." This is the defining feature that sets the Prata festival apart from many other patronal feasts in inland Campania: the costumed procession accompanying the young Roman martyr's statue transforms the event into a popular historical pageant, beloved especially by children.
Saint Pancras was a Roman martyr killed as a teenager, patron saint of youth and, by tradition, protector of promises and oaths. Building on this bond, the parish and the Festival Committee have developed initiatives for younger generations, such as the "Youth like Saint Pancras" project, which invited local schoolchildren to create poems and drawings about the martyr. The best works were reproduced as miniature votive cards distributed during the festivities, while the entire collection was exhibited in Piazza San Pancrazio. On that occasion, free brochures on the history of the cult of Saint Pancras in Prata Sannita were distributed, and guided tours of the local holy sites were organized in collaboration with the local Archaeological Group.
Alongside the religious schedule, the secular program takes place primarily on the weekend closest to May 12th, featuring musical performances and social gatherings in the square organized by the Prata Sannita Festival Committee. The exact calendar is announced by the organizers only in the weeks immediately preceding the feast via the parish, the municipality, and the Committee's social media channels.
Those arriving for the festival will find much more than just a procession. Prata Sannita is one of the most charming villages in the upper Caserta region, dominated by its medieval castle and crossed by the Lete River at the gateway to the Matese area. Stone, water, and forests create a landscape worth exploring before or after the celebrations. The patronal feast, with its dual devotional and social nature, remains the best way to understand the identity of this part of inland Campania, where religious traditions still serve as the primary social glue.
For the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Pancras the Martyr in Prata Sannita (Province of Caserta, Campania), an official program has not yet been published. The festival is tied to the liturgical memorial of the patron saint, which occurs on May 12th. Recent editions have featured a preparatory triduum, a solemn mass in the parish church, and an evening procession with the statue of the martyr.
Those wishing to attend are invited to verify dates and times with the Saint Pancras the Martyr Parish or via the social media channels of the Prata Sannita Festival Committee, which publish the flyer with the complete program a few weeks before the event. The information provided in this entry is based on previous editions and does not constitute a confirmed program for 2026.
Parish Church of Saint Pancras the Martyr, Piazza San Pancrazio 30, 81010 Prata Sannita (CE). The procession winds through the town center; the secular program is concentrated in the main square.
By car: This is the most practical method. The reference motorway exit is Caianello on the A1 Rome-Naples highway, from which you continue along the provincial roads toward the Lete valley and the Matese. By public transport: Prata Sannita does not have a train station, and connections are provided by local bus lines, with reduced service on public holidays.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and events in the square are free of charge.
May 12th is the main day: it is best to arrive in the afternoon to attend the solemn mass and then follow the evening procession. The historic center is hilly and largely paved with cobblestones, so comfortable shoes are recommended. It is best to leave your car on the outskirts of the town, as many streets remain closed to traffic during the procession. For the updated program, it is advisable to check the parish and Festival Committee channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
