The patron saint festival blending faith and rural traditions, held every August 3rd in Fontegreca
The Saint Stephen Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for Fontegreca, a small town of just over seven hundred inhabitants nestled in the Trebulani Mountains, on the edge of the Matese area in the province of Caserta. Every August 3rd, the village gathers around its patron saint, celebrated for centuries as the community's guardian, in a day that unites deep religious devotion with the territory's rural roots.
The spiritual heart of the festival lies in the liturgical celebrations: the Solemn Holy Mass and the procession with the statue of Saint Stephen through the streets of the historic center involve the entire population and the many locals who return to the village specifically for this occasion. It is a moment of reflection and collective identity, passed down from generation to generation.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich program of popular events. The evening comes alive with folk music concerts and traditional ballroom dancing competitions, which attract enthusiasts from all the neighboring towns. The most characteristic and beloved element remains the parade of agricultural machinery, complete with awards: tractors and work vehicles travel through the town in a procession that celebrates the deep bond between Fontegreca and its rural vocation.
The day culminates in the exhibition of agricultural and local products, an opportunity to discover the food and wine excellence of this corner of the Upper Caserta area, a land of forests, springs, and traditional crops. Fontegreca is also famous for the nearby Bosco degli Zappini, a suggestive natural cypress forest that makes the area an ideal destination for those who love to combine culture, faith, and nature.
Promoted by the Fontegreca Festival Committee with the support of the Municipality of Fontegreca, the Saint Stephen Feast is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a celebration of the entire community, a way to reaffirm belonging to an authentic village in inland Campania, far from mass tourism circuits and capable of preserving genuine traditions. Those visiting Fontegreca during these days will discover the warm hospitality of a town that still lives to the rhythm of its roots.
On August 3, 2026, Fontegreca celebrates its patron Saint Stephen with the customary festival that unites faith and tradition. The detailed program of the edition, including times, concerts, and guests, is usually released by the Festival Committee and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event.
Confirmed, as every year, are the Holy Mass and the procession with the saint's statue, folk music concerts, ballroom dancing competitions, the award-winning parade of agricultural machinery, and the exhibition of local products.
Fontegreca is located in the Upper Caserta area, at the foot of the Trebulani Mountains. By car, it can be reached from the Caianello motorway exit (A1) by continuing towards Venafro and the Upper Volturno valley; by train, the reference station is Vairano-Caianello, from where you can continue with local transport.
The festival takes place every year on August 3rd, the day of the patron saint, Saint Stephen.
Participation in the festivities and events in the square is free and open to everyone.
The summer period is ideal for combining your visit with a discovery of the Bosco degli Zappini and the naturalistic itineraries of the surrounding area.
