The patron saint of the village at the gates of the Matese
In the inland region of Molise, in the province of Isernia, the village of Sant'Agapito — described as the gateway to the Matese mountains on the northwest side — celebrates its patron saint, Saint Agapitus the Martyr, in mid-August. The patronal feast, culminating on August 17th and 18th, is the most important religious and popular event of the year for the community.
The celebrations follow the typical pattern of major patronal feasts in Southern Italy: the solemn mass, the procession with the saint's effigy through the village streets, the brass band accompanying the ceremonies, and, to conclude, a fireworks display. The feast is part of the village's busy summer calendar of celebrations, which also includes the feast of Saint Roch on August 16th and the Assumption on August 15th.
The feast of Saint Agapitus the Martyr is a time when the village comes together, also welcoming those returning for summer holidays. Amidst faith, music, and conviviality, the celebrations renew the identity of this Molise community, which also preserves ancient artisanal traditions such as lace-making.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Agapitus the Martyr returns on August 17th and 18th, 2026, in Sant'Agapito (IS). As per tradition, the two days will be marked by the solemn mass, the procession with the saint's effigy through the village streets, the brass band, and the fireworks display. The complete religious and civil program is usually announced by the parish and the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the occasion.
The detailed program will be released by the parish and the festival committee.
