In Cassano Irpino, a small town of just under a thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of about 550 meters in the Province of Avellino, Campania, August 24th and 25th are no ordinary dates. These are the days when the community celebrates Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the town's patron saint and the namesake of the Mother Church. The patronal feast is a fixed appointment in the village's liturgical and civil calendar: those who have emigrated return home, houses reopen, and the streets of the historic center are adorned with lights and market stalls.
The celebration is not limited to the two main days. According to the custom of local devotion, festivities begin around August 16th with the novena, followed by the solemn triduum in the days immediately preceding the anniversary. These are days of reflection, with evening celebrations in the Mother Church, hymns, and catechesis, preparing the village for the most anticipated event of the summer.
August 24th, the liturgical day of the Apostle, is the heart of the feast. The morning is marked by Eucharistic celebrations, including a solemn mass, which in some editions has been presided over by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia, to which the parish belongs. In the afternoon, the most significant moment takes place: the procession with the relic of Saint Bartholomew's arm and the saint's statue, which traditionally moves from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and travels through the town's districts—including Iardino and Torre—before finally returning to the Mother Church.
On August 25th, the feast continues with another mass in honor of the patron saint and a second procession through the streets of the town. This is the day when the civil festivities reach their peak: brass band concerts in the main square, pop music performances, and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display that illuminates the valley. In past editions, local brass bands and musical groups have performed on stage, upholding a tradition that remains vibrant and highly popular in Irpinia.
The devotional heritage of Cassano Irpino also holds artistic value. The Mother Church of Saint Bartholomew, built in 1557 after a severe plague and remodeled in the 18th century—the late-Baroque facade bears an inscription dated 1760—houses a valuable wooden statue of the saint attributed to the sculptor Jacopo Colombo and the relic carried in the procession. Beneath the nave lies a crypt with 18th-century stucco work. Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve, is traditionally invoked as the protector of tanners and butchers.
Visitors arriving for the feast will discover a village with a medieval layout, featuring stone portals, arches, and staircases, dominated by the remains of the 15th-century castle. Nearby are the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, with 15th-century frescoes and the Holy Stairs, and the monumental centuries-old linden tree. Cassano is also known as the "land of waters" due to the abundance of its springs at the foot of the Terminio-Cervialto massif: a natural setting that makes a visit worthwhile beyond the festival days.
The town's social vitality does not stop in August. The Cassano calendar also includes the Laine and Chickpeas Festival in June, the Montevergine Fair on September 8th—the date of the parish's main celebration—and the historic Chestnut Festival at the end of October, alongside the "Return to the Middle Ages" re-enactment organized by the Pro Loco Forum Felix.
The anniversary of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle falls on August 24th, and in Cassano Irpino, in the Province of Avellino, the festivities traditionally extend to the following day, the 25th. The parish explicitly indicates August 24-25 as the patronal days, while the novena begins around August 16th and is followed by the solemn triduum.
For the 2026 edition, however, an official program has not yet been released: neither the Festival Committee's poster nor the schedules for the celebrations and evening shows have been published. The dates indicated here should therefore be considered indicative and subject to confirmation. Those wishing to attend can contact the Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Parish or check the channels of the Municipality of Cassano Irpino and the Pro Loco Forum Felix in the days immediately preceding mid-August, when the full calendar is usually announced.
Recurring elements of the Cassano tradition: the 2026 program has not yet been formalized.
Cassano Irpino can be reached by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, taking the Avellino Est or Lacedonia exit depending on your direction, then continuing along the SS 7 Ofantina towards Nusco and Montella. From Avellino, the journey takes about 45 minutes. The reference railway station is in Avellino, connected to the town by provincial bus lines with reduced service on holidays: a car remains the most practical means of transport. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, about 100 km away.
Religious celebrations are held in the Mother Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, on Via Chiesa, and in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the starting point of the procession. Evening shows and brass band concerts take place in the town's main square.
Participation in religious celebrations, processions, concerts in the square, and the fireworks display is free and held outdoors. Only the food stands and market stalls along the streets of the center require payment.
The historic center is characterized by narrow alleys and staircases: comfortable shoes are recommended. On August evenings, at an altitude of 550 meters, the temperature can drop significantly, so a light jacket is useful. Parking in the town is limited during the festival: it is advisable to arrive early and leave your car on the outskirts of the town. For accommodation, you can look to the farmhouses and facilities in Montella, Nusco, and Bagnoli Irpino, all just a few kilometers away.
