The return of emigrants to the Salento village of Seclì

Every August, the small village of Seclì, in the heart of Salento near Lecce, gathers for one of its most heartfelt traditions: the Emigrant's Festival. It is a time when the town opens its doors to those who moved away for work—to Northern Italy or abroad—and return home with their families to reconnect with their roots, childhood squares, and familiar faces. A celebration of community and memory, it turns the historic center into one big collective embrace.
With about 1,800 inhabitants, Seclì is one of the most intimate villages in the Puglia region. Its stone houses, lime-washed narrow streets, and the 17th-century Palazzo Ducale belonging to the D'Amato family make the historic center a small open-air museum. It is within these streets that the Emigrant's Festival comes to life, with festive lights, long banquet tables, and outdoor evenings that bring together residents and returning guests.
The festival program is defined by traditional Salento music. Local groups enliven the evenings with songs, tambourines, and the infectious pizzica, the folk dance that has accompanied Salento's celebrations for centuries. There is no shortage of group dances and social moments that, until late at night, unite different generations in the same square.
As with any Puglian village festival, gastronomy plays a central role. The tables offer typical local dishes and the flavors of Salento's peasant cuisine. The Emigrant's Festival also takes place during the same days as the historic Sagra te la carne te cavaddhru, a festival dedicated to horse meat that has been attracting thousands of visitors to Seclì for over twenty-five years with its famous "paninu cu li pezzetti".
The theme of emigration is deeply ingrained in the history of Seclì and all of Salento, a land that saw a massive exodus of workers and families during the 20th century. The festival was born to honor this bond: a way to show that the town does not forget those who are far away and that roots remain alive, from generation to generation. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic Salento, far from the beaten tourist paths, defined by hospitality, memory, and community.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Seclì and the organizers. As per tradition, the event is expected in August in the town's historic center. It is recommended to check for information on the Municipality's official channels as summer approaches.
