The summer festival celebrating the freshest fruit of Salento in Parabita
The Watermelon Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Parabita, a town of just under 9,000 inhabitants located in the lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, about ten kilometers from Gallipoli. As the name suggests, the event is entirely dedicated to watermelon, the quintessential summer fruit: fresh, thirst-quenching, and perfect for replenishing minerals lost in the heat, it has always been a staple on Salento tables during the hottest months.
The festival takes place in the town center, near the striking Basilica of Santa Maria della Coltura, a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Coltura, the patron saint of Parabita. The area around the basilica fills with colorful stalls overflowing with freshly sliced watermelon and typical local products.
The heart of the festival is, naturally, gastronomic. Along the stalls, you can sample fresh watermelon slices, granitas, and sorbets prepared according to local recipes, as well as sweets and drinks made from this fruit, alongside the inevitable traditional Salento specialties. It is the perfect occasion for an evening outdoors, in good company, amidst genuine flavors and the scents of summer.
Alongside the culinary side, the Watermelon Festival offers live music with Salento bands performing pizzica and folk music, dance performances, and popular art displays. The pizzica, a traditional ritual dance of Salento with an infectious rhythm, transforms the squares into a large collective dance that involves both young and old until late at night.
Visiting Parabita during the festival is also a way to discover a village with an ancient history: the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and has yielded famous artifacts such as the so-called Venuses of Parabita, Paleolithic statuettes of great archaeological value. The original core of the town, with its medieval layout, still preserves traces of the ancient walls and access gates. The Watermelon Festival thus fits into a rich calendar of events that enliven the town throughout the year, between food festivals and religious celebrations linked to the devotion to the Madonna della Coltura.
The event is free to enter and designed for all ages: families, young people, and visitors passing through Salento in summer will find an authentic opportunity to experience the atmosphere of Salento towns, away from the major tourist flows of the coast but just minutes from the beaches of Gallipoli and lower Salento.
The 2026 Watermelon Festival in Parabita is expected on August 5th and 6th, maintaining its early August slot from previous years. The festival takes place in the town center, near the Basilica of Santa Maria della Coltura, with stalls dedicated to fresh watermelon, granitas, and typical Salento cuisine products.
The detailed program for the evenings — including musical guests, pizzica performances, and entertainment — has not yet been released and will be announced later on the channels of the Municipality of Parabita and the organizing associations. The structure remains traditional: watermelon-based tastings, live folk music, and Salento dances until late, with free admission.
