The festival celebrating Cefalù's signature dish, a legacy of Arab Sicily

The Pasta a Taianu Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events in Cefalù, a stunning village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, nestled between the Rocca and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Every summer, the festival brings the aroma of a dish that is much more than a recipe to the historic center: it is a collective memory, an identity, and the history of the city. The event is organized by the Polis Kephaloidion Cultural Center, which has been committed to promoting Cefalù's traditions for years, and typically takes place in Piazza Cristoforo Colombo.
The name comes from the taianu, the large terracotta pot in which the pasta is cooked: a term rooted in the Arab domination of Sicily. The traditional recipe features macaroni seasoned with a rich beef and lamb ragù, fried eggplant, generous amounts of pecorino cheese, and spices. Everything is layered in the pot and slow-cooked: in the ancient version, cooking occurred simultaneously from above and below, with embers placed on the lid. It is a festive dish, traditionally linked to the celebrations of the Most Holy Savior, the patron saint of Cefalù.
For two evenings, the historic center comes alive with food stalls where you can enjoy 'pasta a taianu' along with other typical Sicilian dishes, desserts, and local wines. There is no shortage of folk music, folklore groups, live cooking demonstrations, and craft markets, all set against a scenic backdrop of medieval alleys, glimpses of the sea, and the majestic presence of the Norman Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The festival is usually held in August, at the height of the tourist season, and is now a well-established tradition with over a decade of history. It represents a precious opportunity for residents and visitors to discover the most authentic soul of Cefalù through its signature dish, in a moment of conviviality and celebration that renews the community's bond with its roots every year.
The 2026 edition of the Pasta a Taianu Festival in Cefalù has not yet been officially announced. Based on previous editions, the event usually takes place in August, in the historic center, coinciding with the festivities of the Most Holy Savior. Tastings of the famous dish of Arab origin will be renewed, accompanied by folk music and folklore. The dates and the final program will be communicated by the organization in the months preceding the event.
Cefalù is easily accessible by train along the Palermo-Messina line (Cefalù station, a few minutes' walk from the historic center). By car, take the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway, Cefalù exit. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, about an hour away.
The festival usually takes place in August in Piazza Cristoforo Colombo, in the historic center of Cefalù, generally starting in the evening.
Access to the festival area is free; tastings are paid for at the stalls. Booking accommodation well in advance is recommended, given the high summer season.
