A celebration of the sea and sardines in Castel di Tusa
The Fish Festival is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Castel di Tusa, the seaside district of the municipality of Tusa, in the province of Messina. Nestled in the heart of northern Sicily, between the Nebrodi mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the village transforms its promenade into a vibrant festival space every August, where fresh fish and local culinary traditions take center stage.
The festival has ancient roots tied to the fishing vocation of Castel di Tusa. Oral tradition traces the event back to the early 1900s, telling the story of fishermen caught in a storm who were rescued and fed by the villagers with roasted sardines. Since then, that gesture of hospitality is renewed every year by offering fish and a glass of wine to the many tourists and holidaymakers visiting the coast.
For centuries, Castel di Tusa has been linked to its ancient port. Between the 18th and early 20th centuries, it developed a robust fishing economy, particularly in sardines, which were salted and exported, making Tusa's fish famous on both national and international markets. It is no coincidence that the village's most famous beach is the Spiaggia delle Lampare, named after the lanterns used on boats for night fishing.
The festival evening revolves around the food stalls set up along the promenade, where you can taste local maritime specialties:
The culinary offerings are complemented by live music, entertainment, and performances, creating a convivial atmosphere that draws residents and visitors alike. The setting is the picturesque promenade of Castel di Tusa, just a short walk from the Atelier sul Mare and the famous Fiumara d'Arte contemporary sculpture park.
The Fish Festival is part of a rich summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Tusa, which also includes the Olive Oil Festival, the 'Ancient Flavors' events, theatrical performances at the archaeological site of Halaesa Arconidea, and the Feast of Maria SS. Assunta. It is a perfect opportunity to discover a territory that blends sea, archaeology, contemporary art, and the authentic culinary traditions of the Sicily region.
The 2026 Fish Festival in Castel di Tusa is set for August 12th, according to the summer events calendar approved by the Municipality of Tusa (ME). As per tradition, the festival will take place on the seafront of the seaside hamlet with stalls offering fried fish, sardines, and maritime specialties, accompanied by music and entertainment. The detailed program, including times and culinary offerings, will be announced by the municipal administration in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Fish Festival takes place on the promenade of Castel di Tusa, a seaside hamlet of the Municipality of Tusa (ME), in Sicily.
By car: take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at Tusa, then follow signs to the coast. By train: the Tusa station is on the Messina-Palermo line, a short distance from the seaside hamlet.
The event is traditionally held in the first ten days of August. For the 2026 edition, the date set by the municipal calendar is August 12th.
Free admission to the event; tastings are available for purchase at the stalls. We recommend arriving in the evening and combining your visit with a tour of the Atelier sul Mare and the artworks of the Fiumara d'Arte.
