The celebration of extra virgin olive oil from the Halaesa Valley in Tusa
The Olive Oil Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the village of Tusa, located in the province of Messina on the northern slopes of the Nebrodi mountains. Every year, on August 10th, the central Piazza Salvo d'Acquisto transforms into a vibrant social hub where locals and tourists gather to celebrate the region's signature product: extra virgin olive oil.
The festival pays tribute to the extra virgin olive oil of the Halaesa Valley, produced from native Sicilian cultivars such as Ogliarola Messinese and Santagatese. It is an oil with a light flavor and a characteristic straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, the result of a centuries-old olive-growing tradition that connects Tusa to its agricultural landscape and the ancient Greco-Sicilian city of Halaesa Arconidea.
The heart of the festival lies in the tastings: the stars of the show are bruschetta drizzled with new oil and various herbs, prepared according to recipes passed down through generations. Alongside these, visitors can enjoy chickpea soup, sfinci, and sugary doughnuts, embarking on a culinary journey that showcases the traditional cuisine of the Nebrodi. The tastings are accompanied by folk performances, music, and entertainment that keep the evening lively until late.
The Olive Oil Festival is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Tusa, which hosts numerous festivals dedicated to local excellence each year, including the patronal feast of Maria SS. Assunta in mid-August and events at the archaeological site of Halaesa Arconidea. As a free-admission event, the festival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Nebrodi village and its typical products in the heart of the Sicilian summer.
The 2026 edition of the Tusa Olive Oil Festival, the twenty-fifth, is scheduled for August 10, 2026, in Piazza Salvo d'Acquisto starting at 9:00 PM. The event, organized by the ARCI Circle of Tusa, is part of the "Estate Alesina 2026" program approved by the Municipality.
The highlight is the tasting of local extra virgin olive oil along with dishes seasoned with it: bruschetta with various herbs, chickpea soup, sfinci, and sugary doughnuts. The evening is enlivened by musical entertainment from the De Colores band. Free admission.
