The ancient flavors of the Madonie mountains in Gratteri, every August 14th
The Vastedda Fritta Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Gratteri, a tiny village of just over 800 residents nestled at an altitude of 670 meters on the northern slopes of the Madonie, in the province of Palermo. Every August 14th, on the eve of Ferragosto, the village fills with visitors from all over Sicily eager to taste the specialty that has made it famous across the island.
The vastedda fritta is a small disc of bread dough, strictly hand-kneaded with flour, yeast, and extra virgin olive oil, then plunged into boiling oil and served piping hot. It is enjoyed in two versions: sweet, sprinkled with sugar, or savory, seasoned with anchovies and a pinch of salt. Recognized as a traditional Sicilian agri-food product (PAT), it encapsulates centuries of Madonie peasant wisdom in a simple, genuine form.
The festival is much more than a simple tasting event. Throughout the day, the historic center of Gratteri hosts guided tours of the town's monuments and alleys, an artisanal village with stands featuring local products and crafts, and a rich array of live entertainment: street theater, contemporary circus artists, Sicilian folk music groups, and concerts that bring the squares to life until late at night. Tastings are centered in Piazza San Francesco, while Corso Umberto I hosts the evening's musical performances.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Gratteri with the support of the Municipality, the festival has over forty years of history behind it: the 45th edition was celebrated in 2025. Over the years, it has become an opportunity to rediscover the oldest traditions of this Madonie village and to promote a product that is now part of the local gastronomic identity.
Between the aroma of freshly fried vastedde, the folk music, and the festive atmosphere of an authentic Madonie village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Vastedda Fritta Festival offers an experience that combines taste, culture, and conviviality. An unmissable event for those who want to experience the Sicilian Ferragosto away from the most crowded tourist spots.
The 2026 edition of the Vastedda Fritta Festival is confirmed for August 14, 2026, in Gratteri, in the province of Palermo. As per tradition, the historic center will host tastings of the vastedda fritta, sweet or savory, along with a rich program of shows and entertainment.
At the moment, the detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: the Pro Loco of Gratteri has announced that it will be released shortly. Based on previous editions, we expect tastings in the square, an artisanal village with local products, guided tours of the village, street theater, contemporary circus artists, and Sicilian folk music performances that will enliven the evenings until late at night.
