Sicilian granita takes center stage between the Madonie mountains and the sea in Campofelice di Roccella

In the heart of summer, Campofelice di Roccella — a small town in the Province of Palermo overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and nestled between the coast and the Madonie mountains — dedicates an entire event to one of Sicily's most delicious symbols: granita. The Granita Festival transforms the town squares into a culinary trail where island confectionery tradition meets the creativity of local master artisans.
The common thread of the festival is the evocative legend linking this dessert to the territory: it is said that an Arab prince, centuries ago, had the intuition to combine the ice of the Madonie with the juice of the prized coastal lemons, giving life to what would become one of the prides of Sicilian pastry. From that story stems an event that aims to be a blend of storytelling, tasting, and village celebration.
The heart of the festival is the tastings: throughout the evenings, the public samples granitas offered by local producers and gelaterias, ranging from classic recipes — lemon, almond, mulberry, coffee — to more innovative interpretations. Among the new features that have enriched the event are a competition for the best granita, voted on directly by the public, and a photography contest dedicated to Campofelice di Roccella and its scenic spots.
Alongside the flavors, the festival offers a program of evening entertainment: historical re-enactments with period costume pageants, roaming music through the town center, and concerts in the squares. The evenings come alive at the Belvedere dei Tramonti, in Piazza Garibaldi, and along Via Cesare Civello, the heart of the festivities, providing a backdrop of sea, lights, and summer scents.
Organized by the cultural association Campo…felicemente together with the Municipality of Campofelice di Roccella, the festival offers free admission and represents one of the most pleasant opportunities to discover this corner of Sicily during the summer, combining a visit to the village, the beaches, and the Madonie hinterland with the pleasure of an authentic granita.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Granita Festival have not yet been officially communicated. Based on the custom of previous years, the festival should take place in Campofelice di Roccella (PA) in the second half of August, with the usual format consisting of granita tastings, a competition for the best creations, historical costume re-enactments, and evening concerts at the Belvedere dei Tramonti and Piazza Garibaldi.
The detailed program will be announced by the cultural association Campo…felicemente together with the Municipality. It is recommended to check the official channels for confirmed dates.
