The patronal feast of the seaside village of Finale di Pollina, blending faith, sea, and tradition

Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea at the northernmost edge of the Pollina municipality, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the seaside village of Finale dedicates one of the most heartfelt events of the Madonie calendar to its patron saint, the Madonna della Lettera. It is an occasion that merges religious devotion with the popular festivities typical of Sicilian tradition, drawing residents, holidaymakers, and visitors to the coast.
The cult of the Madonna della Lettera, also venerated in Messina where she is the patron saint, reached Finale through the Ventimiglia family, Marquises of Geraci and feudal lords of the Madonie, whose holdings included the fief of Finale. The festival has its roots in the Ascension celebrations, marked by solemn mass and a Eucharistic procession. A turning point occurred in 1952, when the Bishop of Cefalù donated a statue of the Madonna della Lettera to the village: since canon law prohibits two feast days on the same date, the celebrations were separated, and the patronal feast found its place in the summer calendar.
The most characteristic and defining element of the festival is the blessing of the sea. In front of the Ascension Church, near the tower, the priest leads a moment of prayer with the Angelus and blesses the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea as the sun rises high enough to turn them silver. It is a ritual that deeply binds the community of fishermen and sailors to their faith.
Alongside the religious solemnity, the program retains the flavor of a traditional village fair. In the afternoon, the traditional popular games take place: the "antinna a mari" (greasy pole suspended over the sea), "a ruttura i pignati" (breaking the pots), tug-of-war, and sack races, which once offered prizes to the winners. Traditionally, stalls sold toys and peanuts. The Pollina brass band accompanies the day and performs on stage in the evening, while fireworks close the festivities, illuminating the coastline.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by popular evening performances—cabaret and concerts by well-known artists—that enliven Piazzale Torre, transforming the patronal feast into one of the highlights of the Pollina summer season, as part of the wider municipal events calendar.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna della Lettera Festival in Finale di Pollina have not yet been published. The patronal feast is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of August in the seaside village of Finale, and will likely follow the usual format: the solemn blessing of the sea in front of the Ascension Church, the procession with the statue of the Madonna, afternoon popular games, accompaniment by the Pollina brass band, and closing fireworks. The detailed program, including any evening shows, will be announced by the Municipality of Pollina in the weeks leading up to the event.
