A week of triathlon, nature, and conviviality on the island of Pantelleria
Pantathlon is a sports tourism event held every year in late May on the island of Pantelleria, in the municipality of the same name in the Province of Trapani, Sicily. It is not a competitive race with rankings and podiums, but rather a week of training, experiences, and conviviality that combines the three triathlon disciplines—swimming, cycling, and running—with the discovery of one of the most fascinating territories in the Mediterranean, halfway between Sicily and the Tunisian coast.
The event was born in 2023 from the intuition of Filippo Di Mauro, a Sicilian economist and passionate triathlete, who wanted to create an event capable of uniting movement, nature, culture, and friendship. Since then, Pantathlon has become a small annual pilgrimage for those who love to swim, cycle, and run, but also to eat, laugh, and discover new places. Each edition welcomes a small group of about thirty athletes from different parts of the world, guided by expert instructors along the island's roads, trails, and coves.
The program is spread over a week and alternates between sports sessions and moments of relaxation and social interaction. Recurring activities include:
Alongside sports, Pantathlon offers cultural, naturalistic, and gastronomic initiatives that enhance the historical, landscape, and productive heritage of Pantelleria: from the dammusi (traditional stone houses) to the bush-trained vines (a UNESCO heritage site), from passito wine to capers, and the inevitable shared gelato among the athletes. It is an opportunity to experience the island during the off-season, discovering its authentic identity far from the summer crowds.
Supported by the Pro-Pantelleria association and recognized by the municipal administration as an opportunity for promotion and development for the local community, Pantathlon represents a virtuous model of sustainable sports tourism. It involves local operators and generates positive impacts on the island's economy and image, de-seasonalizing tourist flows and showcasing an active, welcoming Pantelleria deeply connected to its land.
The third edition of Pantathlon was held in Pantelleria from May 23rd to 30th, 2026. Officially presented with the support of Pro-Pantelleria and the municipal administration, the edition brought together about thirty athletes from different parts of the world.
The program alternated between sports sessions and moments of discovery: swimming training, road cycling outings along the coast, running and trail runs (including an outing to Cala Cottone and routes on the north-west coast, with meeting points at Mursia), as well as activities around the Lake of Venus. There was no shortage of cultural and gastronomic initiatives dedicated to the island's heritage.
Several activities of the week were also open to the public, confirming Pantathlon's vocation as a model of sustainable sports tourism and promotion of the Pantescan territory.
Several activities are open to the public; please contact the organization the day before to confirm.
Pantelleria can be reached by plane via flights to the island's airport (connections with Palermo, Trapani, and, in season, other Italian cities) or by ferry or hydrofoil from the port of Trapani. On the island, it is advisable to rent a car or a scooter to move between the various meeting points.
The event has a limited number of participants (a few dozen) and a waiting list is in place. Registration and updated details are available on the official website pantathlon.com. Discounted hotel rates at affiliated facilities on the island are communicated by the organizers.
Bring equipment for swimming, cycling, and running; check the weather and winds, which are typical of the island. This period is also recommended for those seeking an active stay outside of the high season.
