The Pantelleria caper festival: a celebration of nature, history, and flavor
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Cappero Fest is an annual event, usually held in early September, celebrating the signature product of Pantelleria, located in the municipality of Pantelleria, in the province of Trapani, at the southernmost tip of Sicily. The star of the show is the Pantelleria caper, known as the island's "emerald"โone of the Mediterranean's most prized agricultural products, grown on volcanic terraces. Launched in 2022 by the Barbacane ODV Association, the festival aims to promote the culinary, agricultural, and cultural traditions of this unique borderland.
Cappero Fest is more than just a food festival; it is a journey through environment, memory, and flavor. The day begins with a guided nature hike led by official guides from the Pantelleria Island National Park, exploring iconic sites such as the FAI Pantelleria Garden, the Piana di Ghirlanda, and the island's historic caper fields. Along the way, visitors learn about the cultivation techniques of the caper and the alberello (bush-trained) vine, a practice recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Beyond nature, the festival offers a dive into history with a visit to a World War II bunker, a testament to the island's strategic role in the Mediterranean. The main event takes place at Punta San Leonardo, in the center of Pantelleria, where evening food stalls serve traditional island dishes and local wines.
Flavor meets entertainment: every edition features concerts and musical performances that bring the evening to life in a convivial atmosphere overlooking the sea. Today, Cappero Fest is one of the most beloved events on the Pantellerian summer calendar, uniting residents and visitors in celebrating an agricultural and cultural identity unique to the Mediterranean.
Attending Cappero Fest means discovering the most authentic and secret side of Sicily: a volcanic island defined by dammusi, traditional gardens, hand-tilled terraces, and crystal-clear waters. This free, open-air event is designed for those who want to explore the agricultural and gastronomic heart of Pantelleria through its most precious product.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Cappero Fest have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to take place in September in Pantelleria, featuring the usual program dedicated to the Pantelleria caper, with hikes in the National Park, food stalls, and musical performances. Visitors are encouraged to check the Barbacane ODV Association's channels and local press for updates on dates and the program.
Pantelleria can be reached by plane from Pantelleria Airport (with connections to Trapani, Palermo, and other Italian cities) or by ferry/hydrofoil from Sicilian ports (Trapani). Renting a car, scooter, or quad is recommended for getting around the island.
The heart of the event is at Punta San Leonardo, in the center of Pantelleria (Pantelleria Centro). Morning excursions take place at various points around the island within the National Park.
Access to the food stalls and evening performances is generally free. Booking is recommended for guided nature hikes. Comfortable clothing and hiking shoes are advised for the morning activities.
