About Pane Cunzatu Festival

Every summer, the village of Scifì in the municipality of Forza d'Agrò (province of Messina) celebrates one of the most authentic symbols of Sicilian popular cuisine with the Pane Cunzatu Festival. Organized by the Pro Loco D'Agrò-Scifì in collaboration with the local parish, the event brings the village to life with food stalls, tastings of freshly baked seasoned bread, folk performances, and live music evenings. An authentic village festival where ancient flavors and rural traditions intertwine under the August sky of the Ionian coast of Messina.

A feast of flavors in the village of Scifì

The Pane Cunzatu Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in Scifì, a small hamlet in the municipality of Forza d'Agrò, in the province of Messina. Nestled in the hills overlooking the Ionian Sea, this corner of Sicily transforms its squares and alleys for one night into a grand popular banquet, where the undisputed star is pane cunzatu, the seasoned bread of the Sicilian peasant tradition.

Pane cunzatu, the queen of the evening

Pane cunzatu, literally "seasoned bread," is a preparation that is simple and humble in its origins but incredibly rich in flavor: warm homemade bread, dressed with extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes, fresh cheese, oregano, anchovies, and other local specialties. Along the stalls set up for the festival, you can taste it in its various forms, accompanied by local wine and the flavors of a cuisine that tells the story of the Ionian coast of Messina.

Folklore, music, and traditions

The event, organized by the Pro Loco D'Agrò-Scifì in collaboration with the parish, is more than just a culinary occasion. The evening comes alive with folk performances, musical acts, and entertainment that engage both residents and visitors. The hamlet's tradition also includes the historic summer festival of Scifì, linked to the "cuzzola" (typical fried bread) and ancient Sicilian folk arts such as stick fighting.

Forza d'Agrò, a jewel of the Ionian Sicily

Visiting the festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Forza d'Agrò, one of the most picturesque villages in the province of Messina, famous for its medieval views, the Triade Church, and its panoramas over the Strait. The town and its hamlets have served as a set for films and international productions, preserving the charm of authentic Sicily.

When it takes place

The Pane Cunzatu Festival is traditionally held in August, in the heart of the Sicilian summer, when the village of Scifì fills with visitors and tourists vacationing along the Ionian coast. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Pro Loco D'Agrò-Scifì for the updated program.

Pane Cunzatu Festival — edition 2026
