The festival of folk music and cultural identity on the Ionian coast of Messina
The Romolo Folk Fest is the event that, at the end of every summer, transforms Santa Teresa di Riva—a lively town on the Ionian coast in the province of Messina—into the capital of folk music and Southern Italian identity. Born in 2018, the festival has quickly become one of the most cherished appointments on the Sicilian Ionian coast, attracting folklore enthusiasts, families, and visitors from across the province.
The festival was created to honor the memory of Melino Romolo, a landmark figure in folk singing on the Ionian coast and founder, in 1965, of the group I Canterini della Riviera Jonica. This historic folk ensemble from Roccalumera has preserved and passed down the region's musical and choreographic heritage for decades. The festival carries on this legacy, turning Romolo's philosophy—that folklore is not just dusty memories, but a living light illuminating the path ahead—into its cultural manifesto.
The Romolo Folk Fest program is a journey through Mediterranean sounds: pizzica, tarantella, ritual chants, and folk dances take turns on stage alongside big names from the Italian folk scene and high-caliber international folk groups. The festival is part of the CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals) circuit, a recognition that places it within a global network of festivals dedicated to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
Beyond the evening performances, the festival features the INFOLKettando initiative, with stalls offering local products and tastings that guide the public through a multisensory journey between tangible and intangible heritage. It is in this setting that the Ionian coast of Messina rediscovers its roots, amidst the scents of Sicilian cuisine and the rhythm of drums.
Performances animate the town's central squares, particularly Piazza Antonio Stracuzzi and Piazza Bianca, in the heart of the municipality of Santa Teresa di Riva. Included in the town's summer calendar, the Romolo Folk Fest traditionally represents the grand finale of the season, the event that closes the summer with music and popular tradition, confirming Santa Teresa di Riva's role as an entertainment hub on Sicily's Ionian coast.
The Romolo Folk Fest 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 30, 2026, in Santa Teresa di Riva, on the Ionian coast of Messina. The performances, with free admission, will animate the town's central squares — Piazza Antonio Stracuzzi and Piazza Bianca — starting at 9:30 PM.
The event is part of the "Summer 2026" calendar of the Municipality of Santa Teresa di Riva and represents the grand finale of the summer season, dedicated to music and popular tradition. As per tradition, the evening celebrates pizzica, tarantella, and the folklore of Southern Italy, following the legacy of Melino Romolo.
At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the full artistic program for the 2026 edition: the names of the folk groups and guests will be announced in the weeks preceding the event.
Santa Teresa di Riva can be reached by car via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Roccalumera-Santa Teresa di Riva exit). By train, the Santa Teresa di Riva-Sant'Alessio-Savoca station is on the Messina-Catania-Siracusa Ionian railway line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away.
Evening performances usually begin at 9:30 PM in the central squares (Piazza Antonio Stracuzzi and Piazza Bianca). Admission to festival events is typically free.
In the height of summer, we recommend arriving early to find parking in the town center and taking advantage of the food stalls at the INFOLKettando initiative to sample local specialties.
