Chestnuts, new wine, and autumn traditions in the village of Casalvecchio Siculo

In the heart of the province of Messina, perched on the hills of the Agrò Valley, the small town of Casalvecchio Siculo celebrates the San Martino Festival every autumn, also known as Waiting for San Martino. It is one of those local festivals that captures the most authentic soul of Sicily: a simple, heartfelt event where the community gathers in the village alleys to share good food, the new vintage wine, and the warmth of tradition.
The festival follows the ancient popular saying "On San Martino, all must becomes wine": November 11th, the day dedicated to the saint, marks the moment when the must transforms into new wine. In Casalvecchio Siculo, this occasion becomes a true celebration of autumn flavors, where roasted chestnuts and young wine are the absolute stars, accompanied by the scents and tastes of the local land.
Stands are set up along the streets of the historic center, offering the festival's most beloved specialties:
The evening is enlivened by live music and performances by folk groups, keeping visitors dancing and singing between tastings. During the festival, the village churches remain open, offering a precious opportunity to admire the artistic and religious heritage of Casalvecchio Siculo, a guardian of centuries of Sicilian history.
Attending the San Martino Festival is also a way to discover one of the most charming villages in the Sicily Region: stone streets, panoramic views of the valley, and the genuine hospitality of a community that proudly preserves its roots. The event is organized by the local Pro Loco with the support of the municipal administration, and admission is free.
The 2026 San Martino Festival in Casalvecchio Siculo (Messina) will presumably return in November, faithful to the tradition linking the saint to chestnuts and new wine. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Pro Loco and the municipal administration.
Based on previous editions, the festival will offer tastings of roasted chestnuts, new wine, cuzzole, and sausage sandwiches, along with other typical Nebrodi products, accompanied by live music and folk group performances in the village alleys. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival takes place in November, coinciding with the feast of San Martino (November 11th). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
