The Renaissance re-enactment and historic equestrian joust of the seven districts of Fossano
In June, the historic center of Fossano, in the province of Cuneo, transforms into a Renaissance stage for the Palio dei Borghi - Giostra de l'Oca, one of the most beloved historical re-enactments in Piedmont. For a few days, the city rediscovers the glory of the 16th century, when in 1585 Duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy and his bride, Infanta Catherine of Austria, stopped in Fossano during their wedding journey to Turin. In their honor, the city organized solemn festivities and a grand fireworks display, now recreated with philological care.
At the heart of the event is the challenge between the seven city districts, each with its own symbol and colors: Borgo Vecchio, Borgo Piazza, Borgo Salice, Borgo Sant'Antonio, Borgo San Bernardo, Borgo Nuovo, and Borgo Romanisio. The districts bring the entire city to life with processions, drummers, musicians, and flag-wavers, in a spirit of healthy rivalry involving hundreds of participants in carefully documented period costumes.
The Giostra de l'Oca (Goose Joust) has its roots in the 14th century, when knights at full gallop had to strike a goose's head with a sword. Abandoned in the mid-18th century, the ancient practice has been revived in a modern, bloodless form: today, the district knights compete in speed and archery contests. The decisive element is not simply crossing the finish line first, but hitting the target placed at the end of the course, in a test of skill and nerves that determines the winning district of the Palio.
Beyond the equestrian joust, the program includes a Renaissance dinner in the courtyard of the Castello dei Principi d'Acaja, traditional folk games in the Piazza Castello arena (flag relays, tug-of-war, balance and throwing tests), and performances by the Sbandieratori e Musici dei Principi d'Acaja group. The grand historical pageant, which parades along Via Roma to the arena, is the most scenic moment, capable of transporting residents and visitors back through the centuries.
The Palio dei Borghi represents one of the most significant moments of community spirit for Fossano and the entire Cuneo area. It is an opportunity to rediscover the local Savoyard history, artisan traditions, and the pride of the districts, set against a unique backdrop of medieval arcades, squares, and the majestic Castello degli Acaja. An event that blends historical rigor, spectacle, and popular celebration.
The Palio dei Borghi - Giostra de l'Oca 2026, reaching its 47th edition, brought Fossano to life from June 9 to 13 with a rich program of events in the historic center and the Piazza Castello arena.
Fossano is located on the Turin-Savona railway line and is well-connected by train; the station is a few minutes' walk from the historic center. By car, it can be reached via the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Fossano exit) or the A33 Asti-Cuneo. The nearest airports are Cuneo-Levaldigi and Turin-Caselle.
The Friday folk games cost 3 euros. The Saturday Giostra de l'Oca costs 24 euros (full price) and 10 euros (reduced for over 65s, children, and companions); free entry for small children and people with disabilities.
