The folk festival bringing the urban grove of Cherasco to life
A Forest for the City is the folk festival that gathers the inhabitants of Cherasco—a town in the province of Cuneo overlooking the Roero region in Piedmont—every June. The event was born from the initiative of a group of residents with the aim of promoting and enhancing the small urban grove between Via Galimberti and Via Matteotti, a green area within the city fabric characterized by the presence of numerous tree species: elms, various varieties of oaks, hornbeams, ash trees, pines, birches, and maples.
The heart of the event is a recreational afternoon in the open air, dedicated to families and children but truly open to all ages. Several traditional game stations are set up in the grove, including "Point Competition," "Bullseye," target shooting, bean bag toss, and ring toss. Registration for the games opens in the early afternoon, and participation is free and open to everyone.
The festival is the result of a collaborative effort between local entities: alongside the residents' committee, Cherasco Eventi, the Harold Haupwood association, the Monsignor Calorio Musical Band, the Segre Natural History Museum, and Cherasco è Musica all contribute. It is a concrete example of volunteering and shared care for the city's green spaces.
The event does not end in a single afternoon: to close the program, the grove hosts a brass band concert by the Monsignor Calorio Musical Band, which brings live music among the trees and offers a festive moment for the entire community of Cherasco.
Known for its historic center, churches, and palaces, as well as for its snails and celebrated chocolate, Cherasco is one of the most beloved destinations in the Cuneo Roero area. A Forest for the City tells a different, everyday side of the town: that of a community that meets outdoors, rediscovers the pleasure of old-fashioned games, and takes care of its own green heritage.
