Otiosa Estate – Chiostri d'Autore

A festival that turns "leisure" into a cultural act

Otiosa Estate – Chiostri d'Autore is the summer festival conceived and organized in Marsala, in the province of Trapani, by the OTIUM Social Library and Association. The name plays on the Latin concept of otium—leisure time dedicated to study, reading, and reflection. For a few weeks each summer, this lagoon city in Western Sicily becomes a grand open-air cultural salon where books, music, and visual arts meet during the warmest evenings of the year.

The venues: from the OTIUM headquarters to the Chiostro del Carmine

Events take place between the association's headquarters at Via XI Maggio 106, in the heart of Marsala's historic center, and the evocative cloister of the former Convento del Carmine, which houses the Painting Exhibition Board. It was in this very cloister that the first edition of the OTIUM summer festival came to life: an intimate space steeped in history, perfect for listening to a writer, a performance, or a concert under the Sicilian sky.

Three souls: literature, video art, and music

The Otiosa Estate program is traditionally divided into three strands that alternate throughout the season:

• Conversations and literary meetings: book presentations and dialogues with authors, often focusing on fiction, non-fiction, and local culture.
• Video performances and visual arts: experimental evenings that blend images, words, and music, created over the years in collaboration with media partner Radio 102.
• Concerts: live music events spanning various genres and atmospheres.

A story that continues

The festival is rooted in the activities of the OTIUM Social Library, which has been enlivening Marsala's summers since 2013; the 2023 edition, titled «L'arte della gioia» (The Art of Joy), celebrated the project's tenth anniversary. Over the years, Otiosa Estate has enjoyed the patronage of the Municipality of Marsala, the Ministry of Culture, and the Sicilian Region, confirming its status as a highly anticipated event in the cultural calendar of Western Sicily. Participation often requires a simple reservation, while entry to the meetings is generally free and open to all.
