About Future Horizons – Barbaresco Tower

In the heart of the Langhe, the medieval Tower of Barbaresco transforms for a few weeks into a contemporary art exhibition space. The "Future Horizons" exhibition is part of the "The hill always rises" festival, now integrated into the major ORMA – Artist Traces in Langhe Monferrato Roero project. Between June 20 and July 5, 2026, six hillside villages will host thirteen international artists exploring the theme of transformation, inspired by the writings of Cesare Pavese. A unique dialogue between site-specific works, the UNESCO-listed landscape, and winemaking tradition.

An art festival among the hills of Barbaresco

In Barbaresco, a small town in the Province of Cuneo overlooking the Tanaro river and world-renowned for its wine, the historic medieval Tower opens its doors to contemporary art. The "Future Horizons" exhibition is one of the highlights of the "The hill always rises" festival, which in 2026 becomes part of ORMA – Artist Traces in Langhe Monferrato Roero, a major cultural project uniting regional art exhibitions in support of Alba's bid for Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2027.

Six villages, one vision

The festival is not confined to a single location but spans six villages across the Langhe and Monferrato regions: Castiglione Tinella, Mango, Neive, Barbaresco, Santo Stefano Belbo, and Castagnole delle Lanze. Site-specific works and installations engage with churches, farmhouses, wineries, porticoes, and towers, turning the entire landscape into an open-air museum. The Barbaresco Tower serves as one of the most evocative stops on this journey.

The theme: transformation and Cesare Pavese

The 2026 edition centers on the theme of transformation, understood as a process capable of preserving memory while generating new forms and meanings. The inspiration is drawn from the pages of Cesare Pavese, a writer from Santo Stefano Belbo deeply connected to these hills, particularly his novel The Moon and the Bonfires. Thirteen international artists from Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Uruguay, the United States, and Argentina interpret this dialogue between art, landscape, and community.

More than just exhibitions

The festival program extends beyond the exhibits to include workshops, guided tours, and tastings organized in collaboration with local producers, in a region where art naturally meets wine culture. In Santo Stefano Belbo, the Cesare Pavese Foundation headquarters will host a series of meetings and talks with the artists, offering a deeper look into the works and the meaning of the route.

Conception and curation

The festival was conceived by Ernesto Morales and curated by Marzia Capannolo, under the organizational direction of the Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourism Board. Visiting "Future Horizons" at the Barbaresco Tower means discovering contemporary art while immersed in one of the most famous wine landscapes in Piedmont and Italy.
