About Cracking Art in Monticello d'Alba

From June 12 to August 2, 2026, the romantic park of the Castello di Monticello d'Alba, in the heart of the Roero region (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont), hosts the exhibition "Cracking Art — Tales of Water": 68 brightly colored, regenerated plastic animal sculptures populate the ponds of the 19th-century garden. Curated by Carla Testore, the exhibition celebrates 650 years of the Roero family's uninterrupted presence in the castle (1376-2026), featuring an inaugural weekend of lectures, special tours, and live music.

A contemporary art exhibition in the heart of the Roero

From June 12 to August 2, 2026, the Castello di Monticello d'Alba, in the municipality of Monticello d'Alba (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont), opens its historic park to the exhibition "Cracking Art — Tales of Water. Sculptures in the landscape between nature and artifice". The initiative marks 650 years of the Roero family's uninterrupted presence in the castle, documented from 1376 to 2026: a seven-century history intertwined with the hilly landscape of the Roero, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Works by the Cracking Art collective

The castle's 19th-century romantic garden is dotted with 68 regenerated plastic animal sculptures created by the renowned Cracking Art movement. Dolphins, penguins, wild geese, frogs, turtles, meerkats, snails, and a giant elephant inhabit the ponds and meadows of the park, creating a lively dialogue between art, nature, and environmental sustainability. The vibrant colors of the works contrast with the garden's tranquility, inviting visitors to reflect on the relationship between the natural environment and human intervention. The exhibition is curated by Carla Testore.

The 650th-anniversary celebration weekend

The inaugural weekend of June 13-14, 2026, offers free admission by reservation, featuring a rich program of lectures on the history of the Roero family and the castle, with special access to private apartments and family archives. Speakers include historian Tomaso Ricardi di Netro, Professor Francesco Aimerito on the 1390 Statute of Monticello, Consolata Siniscalco from the Botanical Garden of the University of Turin, and journalist Barbara Ronchi della Rocca. Sunday concludes with a concert by the Quartetto Talea, performing works by Haydn and Mendelssohn.

A heritage to discover

In addition to the sculptures, the visit includes the exhibition "At the Roero Table," featuring historic table settings, and the family archives. The Castello di Monticello d'Alba is one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Piedmont: its silhouette dominates the Roero hills, just a few kilometers from Alba and the Langhe, in one of Italy's most renowned food and wine areas.
