Float parades, masks, and confetti in the heart of Oria
Every year, between late February and early March, the historic center of Oria, in the province of Brindisi, transforms into a vibrant display of color, music, and joy with the «Maschere e Coriandoli» Carnival. It is one of the most popular winter events in the area, drawing families, children, and costumed groups from across the city and neighboring towns in Puglia.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Oria (APS) with the patronage and collaboration of the Oria Municipal Administration and the support of the Insieme Possiamo association. The project is rooted in values of active citizenship, social inclusion, and the promotion of folk traditions: the Carnival is designed as a community event, open and free of charge, where local neighborhoods and associations work together to build the floats and organize the costumed groups.
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats and costumed groups which, typically held over two separate days (Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday), set off from near the Villa Comunale to wind through the streets of the center until reaching Piazza Municipio. Along the route, confetti, streamers, music, and masks of all kinds fill the air, while upon the arrival of the floats, the square becomes a stage for performances, entertainment, and games.
«Maschere e Coriandoli» is a deeply popular and family-oriented celebration: admission is free, and activities are designed primarily to engage children. Those visiting Oria during this period can combine the festivities with exploring the town, dominated by the imposing Swabian Castle and its medieval historic center, one of the most charming in northern Salento.
Located on the border between Salento and the Murgia of Brindisi, Oria is a town rich in history, also known for its summer Historical Pageant. The Carnival represents its most cherished winter event, an opportunity to experience the town's squares and streets in a spirit of shared celebration.
The Oria Carnival «Maschere e Coriandoli» returned in February 2026, organized by the Pro Loco of Oria, the Municipality, and the Insieme Possiamo association. The key days were Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17, with processions starting near the Villa Comunale and arriving at Piazza Municipio.
The festival brought costumed groups, music, and confetti to the streets, engaging children and families in particular. For Shrove Tuesday, a performance by a group of students from the Middle School orchestra was also scheduled.
The second float parade, scheduled for February 17, was however canceled: after the violent tornado that had put the floats and their guardians at risk during the night, the organizers chose to call off the procession for safety reasons and as a sign of solidarity.
The parades start near the Villa Comunale in Oria (BR) and travel through the streets of the center to Piazza Municipio.
By car: Oria is accessible via the SS7 (Via Appia) and the SP road between Francavilla Fontana and Manduria. By train: Oria station is on the Martina Franca–Lecce line of the Ferrovie del Sud Est. Nearest airport: Brindisi-Casale, approximately 35 km away.
Admission is free. For the updated program, it is recommended to check the Facebook page «Maschere e Coriandoli - Il Carnevale di Oria».
