Handmade orecchiette from Nova Siri Marina
The Orecchiette Festival - in Lucanian dialect Sagra di ricch'tell - is one of the most heartfelt gastronomic festivals in Nova Siri Marina, on the Ionian coast of the Province of Matera. The absolute stars are the fresh handmade orecchiette, prepared according to tradition and dressed in various ways, from the classic sauce to richer toppings.
The festival is organized by the Parish of Sant'Antonio di Padova in Nova Siri Marina and takes place in early August in conjunction with the feast of the Madonna del Carmine. Alongside the orecchiette, there are sausage sandwiches, watermelon, local red and rosé wine, and drinks, in a popular and welcoming atmosphere that attracts residents and tourists vacationing on the coast.
The evening comes alive with music and group dancing in the squares of the Marina, including Piazza Massimo Troisi, where the festival continues until late at night. It's the perfect opportunity to savor a symbolic dish of Southern Italian cuisine, immersed in the joy of a summer festival that blends devotion, gastronomy, and socialising.
Nova Siri is a hilltop village of ancient origins, about ten kilometers from the Ionian coast, whose Marina has developed in recent decades as a seaside resort. The festival is one of the moments that best tells the story of this territory in Basilicata, where the table becomes a community celebration.
