The saint who gives the village its name

San Martino d'Agri bears its patron saint in its name: Saint Martin of Tours, a 4th-century bishop and one of the most famous figures of medieval Christianity. His feast day, November 11th, has always been a special occasion for the village in the Val d'Agri, in the Province of Potenza, which on this date celebrates both religious devotion and the traditions of the peasant world.

Saint Martin and the new wine

It is no coincidence that Saint Martin is considered the protector of vines and the patron saint of winemakers. The ancient proverb "at Saint Martin's, all must becomes wine" recalls how new wine is tasted around this date, accompanied by the inevitable chestnuts. November 11th traditionally marked the end of the agricultural year, the time of racking, and, once upon a time, the expiry of sharecropping contracts: a true symbolic threshold of the peasant calendar. In San Martino d'Agri, this heritage lives on in the tasting of the new wine, which brings the village together in cellars and at communal tables.
