The Abruzzo autumn festival in the historic centre of Miglianico
Novello e Castagne – Autumn Flavours is the festival that every November transforms the historic centre of Miglianico, a hilltop village in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, into a great meeting point for seasonal flavours. Organised by the Pro Loco di Miglianico APS, the event celebrates the most typical pairing of the Abruzzo autumn: freshly tapped new wine and roasted chestnuts toasted over the fire.
The heart of the festival is the large brazier lit every evening in the historic centre, a symbol of warmth and sharing, around which visitors and curious onlookers gather. The streets and squares of the town, starting from Piazza Umberto I, fill with scents, lights, and music, offering a food and wine stroll in the heart of the Abruzzo village.
The food stalls offer the best of popular Abruzzo cuisine, with traditional peasant dishes prepared according to local recipes:
The new wine, also produced by local wineries such as the Cantina di Miglianico, is the true star, served alongside seasonal desserts and typical products of the Val Pescara.
Every evening is enlivened by live music and entertainment, accompanying the tasting until late at night. On Sunday, the stalls are also open for lunch, for a weekend dedicated to the taste and traditions of the Municipality of Miglianico and the entire Teatine Abruzzo.
Reaching its sixteenth edition in 2025, "Novello e Castagne" is now a permanent fixture in the Abruzzo autumn calendar, capable of attracting visitors from neighbouring towns and enhancing the food and wine heritage of the area.
The 17th edition of "Novello e Castagne – Autumn Flavours" is scheduled in Miglianico from 7 to 9 November 2026 (dates still to be confirmed by the Pro Loco). The atmosphere that made the festival famous is confirmed: the large brazier in the historic centre, the stalls with arrosticini, pallotte cace e ove, polenta, roasted chestnuts, and new wine, along with live music. The complete programme of times and appointments will be released by the organisers in the weeks preceding the event.
Miglianico is located in the province of Chieti, a few kilometres from the Adriatic coast and the provincial capital. By car: A14 Pescara Sud/Francavilla or Ortona exit, then provincial roads towards the interior. By train: Chieti or Francavilla al Mare stations, with bus connections to the town.
The festival takes place in the historic centre, around Piazza Umberto I. Stalls open in the evening (generally from 6-7 pm), with an additional Sunday lunch. Free admission; you only pay for what you consume at the stalls.
