The Christmas market and ancient propitiatory fire in the historic center of Roccamontepiano

In the heart of Abruzzo, at the foot of the Maielletta in the province of Chieti, the small town of Roccamontepiano officially kicks off the Christmas season with the Advent Christmas Festival. The event traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of Advent, when the village's historic center transforms into a large open-air market and a meeting place for the entire Marrucini community.
From early morning, the streets and squares of the town host over fifty exhibitors offering handcrafted goods, hobbyist creations, gift ideas, and local food and wine specialties. The market route is enhanced by festive lighting and an atmosphere that evokes the most authentic traditions of Abruzzese Christmas.
Local cuisine is the star of the show: food stalls set up by local restaurants and pizzerias offer pallotte cacio e ova (cheese and egg balls), anellini pasta with wild boar ragรน, fried pizzas, sausage sandwiches, crepes, panettone, chestnuts, cooked wine, and mulled wine. A true journey through the flavors of the Maielletta's rural culture.
The most anticipated and symbolic moment of the day is the lighting of the Advent fire, accompanied by a blessing. This ritual is rooted in the ancient agro-pastoral culture of the Marrucini people, blending propitiatory rites with Christian worship to celebrate the anticipation of Christmas and the rebirth of light as the winter solstice approaches. In Roccamontepiano, the sacred fire is lit twice a year: on June 23rd for Saint John the Baptist, and on the first Sunday of Advent.
In the afternoon, the village fills with roving music, performances, and entertainment for children, featuring stilt walkers, a Christmas band, and the unmissable meeting with Santa Claus. The Advent Festival is organized by the Municipality of Roccamontepiano in collaboration with local associations, exhibitors, and merchants, and over the years, it has become one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in the Chieti foothills.
The 2026 Advent Christmas Festival in Roccamontepiano (CH) is expected, as every year, on the first Sunday of Advent. As of this writing, the official dates and program for 2026 have not yet been communicated by the organizers. Upholding tradition, the village at the foot of the Maielletta is expected to host the Christmas market in the historic center, featuring over fifty exhibitors, typical food stalls, and the ritual of lighting the Advent fire.
