About Non Solo Pizza e Fichi

In Roccagorga, a village in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina, "Non Solo Pizza e Fichi" turns the old Italian saying "mica pizza e fichi" (meaning something is trivial) on its head, transforming two humble products into the absolute stars of two late-August evenings. In the heart of the historic center, near Porta Nova, visitors can enjoy pizza topped with Prosciutto della Rocca and local September figs, local charcuterie and cheese boards, traditional dishes with a chef's twist, and spoon desserts, all accompanied by live music.

A festival that reclaims a common saying

In Italian, "mica pizza e fichi" is a common expression used to say that something is far from trivial, though it implies that pizza and figs are simple, unimportant things. In Roccagorga, a village in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina, that saying has been taken literally and flipped: Non Solo Pizza e Fichi was born to prove that when you have the right ingredients, pizza and figs are anything but ordinary. The event takes place every year at the end of August, when the Rocchigiani September figs begin to ripen, and it has become a staple of the Southern Lazio summer.

Porta Nova, the festival's stage

The heart of the event is the Porta Nova area, between Piazza Dante Alighieri and Via Reginaldo Rossi, in the historic center of Roccagorga. Stands generally open at 7:00 PM and the evening continues until late, with tables set up outdoors along the village streets. It is a casual, convivial street-food style event where you can eat while strolling through the alleys or stop to listen to live music.

What to eat

The signature dish is pizza with Prosciutto della Rocca and figs, a perfect contrast between the savory local ham and the sweetness of the September fig. Beyond this classic, the menu expands to include the full range of Lepini products, with chef Massimo Orsini reinterpreting traditional recipes. Recent editions have featured:

  • pizza with Prosciutto della Rocca and Rocchigiani September figs;
  • gourmet sandwiches and local charcuterie and cheese boards;
  • reimagined first courses, from Amatriciana to lemon risotto with cherry tomatoes;
  • fresh pasta parcels with pear and Roccagorga truffle cheese;
  • buffalo stew;
  • traditional desserts and spoon desserts.

Live music and atmosphere

Every evening is accompanied by live music: local bands perform in the square while you dine, with repertoires ranging from Italian pop to rock, in a format designed to keep the party going until night. There is no entrance fee: you only pay for what you consume, following the classic formula of Lazio food festivals.

The Rocchigiani September fig

The September fig is a late-ripening variety tied to the Roccagorga area, maturing between late August and September. It is a niche product grown in the gardens and terraces climbing toward Monte Nero, and the festival is one of the best opportunities to taste it in season. Alongside the figs, the village also proudly showcases Prosciutto della Rocca and truffles harvested in the surrounding hills.

Organizers

The event was created by Fulvio Macera of Cantine di Via Giardini, together with chef Massimo Orsini, and is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Roccagorga with the collaboration of the Pro Loco. It is more of a regional promotion project than a traditional village fair: the idea is to introduce the producers of the Lepini Mountains to an audience arriving from as far as Latina, the Castelli Romani, and Rome.

Roccagorga and the Lepini Mountains

Roccagorga overlooks the Pontine Plain from above, just over twenty kilometers from Latina. The village is known for its Piazza VI Gennaio, one of the most scenic squares in the Lepini area, and for the sanctuary and caves that dot the municipal territory. An evening at "Non Solo Pizza e Fichi" can easily be combined with a stroll through the historic center or a hike along the trails leading up to Monte Nero.
