Lady Bu - The Buffalo Festival from Nose to Tail is the food and wine event through which the Municipality of Pontinia, in the province of Latina, celebrates the animal that symbolizes its territory. In southern Lazio, the buffalo is not just an agri-food product: it is a piece of local history. Before the complete land reclamation of the Agro Pontino, buffaloes populated the marshy lands; they were used to clear canals and proved to be a resilient breed, suitable for plowing heavy soils and precious for the production of milk and dairy products. From that legacy, one of the most vibrant buffalo districts in the region was born.

From nose to tail: the philosophy of the event

The festival's subtitle summarizes its spirit. In Pontinia, the buffalo is not just told through mozzarella, but through the entire animal and everything that can be derived from it. The star is the Pontinia bufaletta, recognized with the municipal De.Co. label, along with a range of preparations that combine traditional rural recipes and contemporary offerings.

The festival format

Alongside the gastronomic aspect, there are workshops for children, organized by age group and dedicated to food education and the themes of the festival, cultural insights into the buffalo supply chain, and evening live concerts, mainly featuring local bands and artists. There is no shortage of institutional moments and technical conferences, involving the Lazio Region and Arsial, on the themes of agricultural development in the Agro Pontino.

Why it's worth the trip

Lady Bu is an authentic festival, not very touristy and with a strong identity: you eat well, spend little, and meet the producers directly. For those visiting southern Lazio, it is a useful opportunity to understand how the land reclamation of the 1930s shaped the landscape and economy of this part of the province, where Pontinia itself is one of the 'foundation cities' of the Agro Pontino. The free entry and the town-square setting make it suitable for families as well.

The territory around the festival

Pontinia is located a few kilometers from Latina and a short distance from the Circeo National Park, Lake Fogliano, and the coast of Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo. The Agro Pontino Museum (MAP) tells the very story of the reclamation and the relationship between man, water, and livestock in these lands: a visit that naturally pairs with the festival day.
