Over 150 years of devotion, fairs, and traditional taverns in the heart of Ciociaria

The Madonna del Piano Festival is the signature event of Morolo, a hillside village in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. Held annually around the third Sunday of September, it is listed in the Lazio Region's registry of centennial festivals—a recognition that certifies its historical continuity and its value as intangible heritage for the entire Ciociaria area.
The festival's origins date back to 1874, when a livestock and trade fair was held around the Madonna del Piano church—a building that existed as a small chapel before 1682 and was expanded to its current size in 1909. This mercantile vocation has never faded: even today, on Sunday morning, the festival area hosts the historic fair with stalls, livestock, and agricultural products, making it one of the few remaining events of its kind in Lazio.
The devotional heart of the event is the tribute to the Madonna delle Grazie. The religious program runs throughout the festival with rosary recitations and Eucharistic celebrations, culminating in the solemn procession that winds through the village—a moment of great popular participation, followed by the faithful from Morolo and neighboring towns.
The culinary experience is provided by the bettole, stalls set up by volunteers serving typical Ciociarian dishes. These are the most convivial spots of the festival, open every evening and capable of turning the fairgrounds into a large village banquet. Alongside the taverns, you will find market stalls, rides for children and adults, and spaces dedicated to musical evenings.
The entertainment program varies from year to year but follows a well-established structure:
The festival is managed by the Madonna del Piano Committee, largely composed of local young people in their twenties and thirties, with the support of the Municipality of Morolo, local businesses, and a large group of volunteers. It is this generational turnover that has allowed the event to grow in recent years, expanding services and offerings without losing its authentic folk character.
Visitors from outside the region will find an authentic example of an Italian patronal feast here: the intersection of religious ritual, agricultural market, and collective fun that has shaped the life of Lazio's villages for centuries. Morolo, located just a few kilometers from Ferentino and Anagni, is perfect to combine with a visit to historic Ciociaria, with its abbeys, medieval villages, and rustic cuisine.
Following the 150th anniversary milestone celebrated in 2025, the Madonna del Piano Festival will return to Morolo, in the province of Frosinone, with its established structure: a solemn procession in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie, a livestock and trade fair on Sunday morning, traditional taverns serving Ciociarian dishes, fairground rides, market stalls, musical evenings, and a final fireworks display.
The official calendar for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: dates will be announced by the Madonna del Piano Committee on their social media channels and through the Municipality of Morolo, usually in the weeks leading up to the event.
