Three days of tradition, cuisine, and music in Sambuca Val di Pesa, in the heart of the Florentine Chianti
The Nettle Festival takes place in Sambuca Val di Pesa, a village in the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, in the province of Florence, nestled in the heart of the Chianti hills. It is one of those traditional village festivals that tell the story of a region through a humble yet surprising ingredient: the nettle, a wild plant that Tuscan rural tradition has masterfully turned into refined and delicious dishes.
Organized by the Sambuca Pro Loco, led by Paolo Beni, in collaboration with the local municipality, the event has become a highly anticipated date on the Val di Pesa summer calendar. For three days, the small village comes alive with scents, flavors, music, and social gatherings, drawing visitors from across the Florentine and Sienese Chianti regions.
The real reason so many flock to Sambuca is the food. The food stand, located at the Pro Loco multi-purpose facility, offers specialties entirely dedicated to the nettle, based on ancient local recipes:
The Nettle Festival is about more than just gastronomy. Each edition offers a rich entertainment program: DJ sets, theatrical performances, musical evenings, and the famous "Quasi uguale Show", organized by the Sambuchine Doc, which closes the festivities on Sunday night. Don't miss the photography exhibition set up along the public gardens, dedicated to the scenic beauty of the Barberino Tavarnelle hills, and the market along the river featuring local artisans.
The atmosphere is completed by the "Bar dei Rioni" in the main square, a meeting point for aperitifs, and the strong sense of community that has always defined this part of the Chianti region.
In a territory world-famous for its wine and landscapes, the Nettle Festival represents the most genuine, non-touristy side of Tuscany: the world of small villages, local associations, and recipes passed down through generations. It is an ideal stop for those looking to discover the Florentine Chianti away from the beaten path, amidst great food, hospitality, and popular tradition.
For 2026, the Nettle Festival in Sambuca Val di Pesa reaches its 12th edition, scheduled from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 21. The event, promoted by the Sambuca Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, confirms the formula that made it popular: traditional nettle-based cuisine, music, shows, and moments of celebration for the whole community.
The food stand offers nettle lasagne, ravioli, and chicken, paired with wines from the Chianti hills. Alongside the dining, the weekend features DJ sets, a theatrical performance, a musical evening, a photography exhibition along the public gardens, and a market along the river.
The program is subject to change: for updates, we recommend checking the Pro Loco Sambuca Val di Pesa Facebook page.
