About Black Pig and Porcini Mushroom Festival

In the heart of the Nebrodi Park, in Cesarò (Province of Messina), the Black Pig and Porcini Mushroom Festival celebrates two local treasures: the Nebrodi black pig, an ancient free-range breed, and the prized mountain porcini mushroom. For two weekends in November, the village comes alive with food stalls, cooking demonstrations, tastings, traditional Sicilian music, forest excursions, and family-friendly entertainment. A free event that blends taste, nature, and rural tradition in the highest municipality of the Messina province.

A feast of flavors in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains

The Nebrodi Black Pig and Porcini Mushroom Festival is one of the most beloved food and wine events of the Sicilian autumn. It takes place in Cesarò, a small mountain town in the Province of Messina and one of the highest settlements in the Nebrodi range, located within the regional park of the same name. Every November, the village welcomes thousands of visitors for two weekends dedicated to the most iconic products of these lands.

The stars of the show: black pig and porcini mushrooms

The heart of the event is the Nebrodi black pig, an ancient native breed officially recognized in 2001, raised free-range in the park's forests. Its meat, with its characteristic ruby-red color and intense aroma, is the basis for traditional cured meats, roasts, and rustic dishes. Alongside the pork, the Nebrodi porcini mushroom, harvested in the high-altitude beech and oak forests, adds its distinct fragrance to the recipes served at the numerous food stalls.

Program and atmosphere

Along the streets of the historic center—from Villa Aldo Moro to Corso Margherita, from Piazza San Calogero to Via Castello—you will find tastings, cooking demonstrations, culinary workshops, and markets featuring local products. There is no shortage of local cheeses like pecorino and provola, as well as honey, olive oil, and artisanal sweets.

  • Food stalls featuring dishes based on black pork and porcini mushrooms
  • Cooking demonstrations and workshops dedicated to Nebrodi flavors
  • Traditional Sicilian music, folklore, and street entertainment
  • Guided excursions and tours in the Nebrodi Park forests
  • Inflatables and activities for children

Nature and tradition

The festival is more than just gastronomy: Cesarò's location, at over a thousand meters above sea level, makes it an ideal starting point for trekking and nature excursions through the park's beech forests, lakes, and trails. The event showcases the entire Nebrodi region, weaving together rural culture, landscapes, and the island's finest products.

A free event for everyone

Organized by the Municipality of Cesarò, the festival offers free admission and represents a unique opportunity to discover the authenticity of the Nebrodi area, far from the most beaten tourist paths. A journey into the flavors, scents, and traditions of one of the island's most evocative mountain regions.
